It is a place where ancient empires left behind remarkable ruins, where dense forests shelter tigers and elephants, where coffee and spice plantations cover rolling hills, and where a long coastline meets the Arabian Sea with beautiful beaches and fishing villages. From the historical grandeur of Hampi to the royal city of Mysuru, and from the beach shacks of Gokarna to the misty hills of Coorg, Karnataka has something special for every kind of traveler.
The state capital Bengaluru, also known as Bangalore, is India's technology hub and one of the fastest-growing cities in Asia. It is a modern, cosmopolitan city with a thriving food and nightlife scene, pleasant weather year-round, and a growing arts and culture community. Mysuru, just a few hours from Bengaluru, is known for its magnificent Mysore Palace, silk sarees, and the grand Dasara festival that draws visitors from around the world. The Hampi ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the remains of the once mighty Vijayanagara Empire and are one of the most atmospheric and photogenic historical sites in all of India.
This Karnataka travel guide is your complete resource for planning a trip to this remarkable state, covering the best time to visit, top destinations, wildlife experiences, coastal getaways, and travel packages for all budgets.
Winter (October to February)
Winter is the best and most comfortable time to visit Karnataka. The weather across most of the state is dry, cool, and pleasant. This is the ideal season to explore Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal, and other ancient heritage sites. Mysuru is wonderful during this time and the city is at its most festive in October during Dasara. Wildlife parks like Bandipur and Nagarhole are excellent for wildlife safaris during winter when animals are easier to spot near water sources. The coastal town of Gokarna also enjoys calm and clear seas during this period.
Summer (March to May)
Summers in the plains of Karnataka can be warm, but Coorg and Chikmagalur in the Western Ghats remain cool and green throughout. This is a good time to visit coffee estates, go trekking in the hills, and enjoy the natural beauty of the ghats before the monsoon arrives. Bengaluru, being at a higher altitude, also remains relatively comfortable compared to other Indian cities in summer.
Monsoon (June to September)
The Western Ghats receive very heavy rainfall during the monsoon and become incredibly lush and beautiful. Jog Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India, is most impressive during the monsoon season. Coorg and the hill stations are green and misty. However, some trekking routes and wildlife parks may be closed during this period.
