Its name means the Abode of Clouds in Sanskrit, and once you visit, you will understand exactly why. The state is covered with rolling green hills, deep gorges, thundering waterfalls, and some of the most unusual natural wonders you will find anywhere in India. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, both located in Meghalaya, hold records for being among the wettest places on earth. The famous living root bridges of the Khasi Hills, grown over centuries by the local tribal communities, are unlike anything else in the world.
Meghalaya is home to three main tribal groups, the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo people, each with their own distinct language, traditions, and festivals. The state capital Shillong is a lively hill town often called the Scotland of the East, known for its music culture, colonial architecture, and pleasant weather. Beyond Shillong, the state has much to offer including the crystal clear waters of Dawki River, the vast caves of Mawsmai, and the dense forests of Nokrek National Park.
This Meghalaya travel guide covers everything you need to plan a great trip, from the best time to visit and top places to explore, to travel tips and tour packages suited for all kinds of travelers.
Indian citizens do not need any special permit to visit Meghalaya. You can travel to most parts of the state freely with a valid government-issued photo ID.
Foreign nationals are required to register with the local authorities upon arrival if they plan to stay beyond 24 hours. This registration is usually done at the Foreigners Registration Office in Shillong or at the local police station in the area you are staying. Most hotels assist their foreign guests with this process.
There are no protected or restricted areas in Meghalaya that require a special permit for regular tourists, whether Indian or foreign. However, if you plan to visit very remote tribal areas or carry out research activities, it is advisable to check with local authorities before traveling.
Autumn and Winter (October to February)
This is the best time to visit Meghalaya. The monsoon has just ended and the entire state looks fresh, clean, and incredibly green. The weather is cool and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from around 5 degrees Celsius in January to about 20 degrees Celsius in October. This is the ideal time for visiting the living root bridges, exploring Shillong, walking to waterfalls like Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls, and taking a boat ride on the Dawki River. The water in Dawki is at its clearest during winter months.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is also a pleasant time to visit. Temperatures are mild and the hills are green and blooming. This is a good time to explore the Garo Hills and go trekking before the heat of summer arrives. Tourist crowds are thinner during these months compared to the winter peak season.
Monsoon (June to September)
Meghalaya receives extremely heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. While the waterfalls are at their most powerful and the landscapes are at their most dramatic, travel can be difficult due to slippery roads, landslides, and flooding in some areas. The living root bridges are still accessible but require caution. This season is best suited for experienced travelers who enjoy rain and do not mind the challenges that come with it.
