Situated at an altitude of about 1,490 meters in the Khasi Hills, it enjoys a cool and pleasant climate for much of the year and is surrounded by pine forests, rolling hills, waterfalls, and lakes that have earned it the nickname Scotland of the East, a comparison made by British settlers who found the landscape reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Shillong is also widely regarded as the rock music capital of India, with a vibrant live music culture that is unlike anything else in the Northeast and has produced some of the finest musicians in the country.
The town has a pleasant, unhurried character with a compact center that is easy to explore on foot. The Ward's Lake, a pretty artificial lake surrounded by manicured gardens in the heart of the city, is a popular spot for morning walks and boating. The Shillong Peak, the highest point in Meghalaya at about 1,966 meters, offers panoramic views of the city, the surrounding Khasi Hills, and on clear days, the plains of Bangladesh far below. The colorful and busy Bara Bazaar is the main market of Shillong and a great place to experience the local energy and browse Khasi handicrafts, textiles, and fresh produce. The Don Bosco Museum in Shillong is one of the finest museums of tribal and indigenous culture in Asia and is an essential visit for anyone wanting to understand the people and traditions of the Northeast.
Shillong is also an excellent base for exploring the wider Meghalaya region, including the living root bridges of Cherrapunji (Sohra), the crystal-clear waters of Dawki River, and the caves of Mawsmai. This Shillong travel guide covers the best time to visit, top attractions, and everything you need for a great stay in this wonderful hill town.
Autumn and Winter (October to April)
This is the best time to visit Shillong. The monsoon has ended, the skies are clear, and the landscapes of the Khasi Hills are lush and beautiful. October and November are particularly lovely months with fresh post-monsoon greenery and comfortable temperatures ranging from 10 to 22 degrees Celsius. December and January are cooler with temperatures dropping to around 4 degrees Celsius at night. The Shillong Autumn Festival in October and the Wangala Festival of the Garo tribe in November are cultural highlights of this season. Spring months of March and April warm up gently and are excellent for day trips to Cherrapunji and Dawki.
Summer (May to June)
May and June are still pleasant in Shillong before the full monsoon arrives. Temperatures are mild and the hills are green. The Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong, held in November, draws visitors who come specifically to see the blooms, but the warm months also have their own charm.
Monsoon (June to September)
Shillong and the surrounding Khasi Hills receive very heavy rainfall during the monsoon. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, both near Shillong, are among the wettest places on earth and the monsoon here can be extreme. Waterfalls are at their most spectacular and the landscapes are dramatically beautiful, but roads can be slippery and travel to outer areas like Dawki and the living root bridges requires extra caution and preparation.
