+91-9873003099 Alternate line: +91-9717930209Uttarakhand is a state in the northern part of India, sitting at the foothills and higher ranges of the Himalayas. It is one of the most spiritually significant states in the country and is often called Devbhoomi, which means the Land of the Gods. The state is home to some of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, including the Char Dham circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh on the banks of the Ganga attract millions of pilgrims and spiritual seekers every year from all over the world.
Beyond its spiritual significance, Uttarakhand is also a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The state has some of India's most famous national parks including Jim Corbett National Park, which was the first national park in India and is known for its Bengal tigers. The Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve are UNESCO World Heritage Sites known for their rare alpine flora and stunning mountain scenery. Popular hill stations like Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora, and Lansdowne offer peaceful retreats away from the heat of the plains.
This Uttarakhand travel guide covers the best time to visit, top destinations, pilgrimage routes, trekking information, and travel packages to help you plan a fulfilling trip to this magnificent state.
Summer (March to June)
Summer is the most popular season to visit Uttarakhand. The weather is pleasant in the hill stations and comfortable for outdoor activities. This is the best time for the Char Dham Yatra, which opens every year in April or May and remains open until November. Trekking routes, including the famous Valley of Flowers trek, also open during summer. Hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital are at their liveliest during this season.
Monsoon (July to September)
The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to Uttarakhand and can make travel difficult in many areas. Landslides are common on mountain roads, and some trekking routes become dangerous. However, Rishikesh and Haridwar are still accessible, and white-water rafting on the Ganga is at its most thrilling during the monsoon months. It is advisable to avoid high-altitude treks and remote mountain routes during this period.
Autumn (October to November)
Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Uttarakhand. The skies are clear after the monsoon and mountain views are stunning. The Char Dham temples close for the winter in October or November with large farewell ceremonies that are worth witnessing. Trekking is excellent during this period and the forests display beautiful autumn colors.
Winter (December to February)
The higher reaches of Uttarakhand receive heavy snowfall in winter and most mountain roads and temples close. However, Auli near Joshimath becomes a popular skiing destination during this time. Rishikesh, Haridwar, Jim Corbett, and Corbett's buffer zones remain accessible and are good for wildlife spotting during the cool winter months.

January is considered the off-season in Uttarakhand, with temperatures ranging from -1°C to 10°C (30°F to 50°F). This month often brings cold weather and snow to higher altitudes, particularly in places like Auli and Mukteshwar, attracting winter sports enthusiasts. While the chilly climate may deter some travelers, those who venture here can enjoy the stunning winter landscapes and a serene atmosphere, perfect for quiet reflection or cozy getaways in charming hill stations. The beauty of the snow-laden mountains offers a unique experience for those looking to embrace the winter season.
By Air
Uttarakhand has two main airports offering domestic flights. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun connects the state to cities like Delhi and Mumbai, making it the most convenient airport for those visiting destinations like Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Mussoorie. Pantnagar Airport, near Nainital, serves the Kumaon region with limited connectivity. For international travelers, Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) is the nearest hub, from where one can continue the journey by domestic flights or road.
By Train
Uttarakhand has good railway connectivity to major Indian cities. Key railway stations include Dehradun, Haridwar, and Kathgodam, which connect travelers to hill stations like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Nainital, and Almora. Trains from Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata regularly serve these stations, making rail travel an efficient option for reaching various parts of the state.
By Road
Uttarakhand boasts a well-maintained road network, making travel by road highly convenient. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation runs frequent buses, including deluxe and Volvo services, from Delhi and neighboring states to popular destinations like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Nainital, and Almora.
