Tamil Nadu Travel Guide

Tamil Nadu is a state on the southeastern tip of India with one of the richest cultural and historical traditions in the entire country. It is the heartland of Dravidian civilization and is known above all for its extraordinary temple architecture. The state has thousands of ancient temples, many of them built over a thousand years ago, featuring towering gateways called gopurams covered in colorful sculptures that you can see from miles away. Temples like Meenakshi Amman in Madurai, Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur, and the Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram are masterpieces of ancient Indian architecture and are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Tamil Nadu is also a state of great natural diversity. It has a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal with popular beach destinations including Marina Beach in Chennai, which is one of the longest urban beaches in the world. The Nilgiri Hills in the western part of the state are home to the charming hill station of Ooty and the popular tea estate town of Kodaikanal. The state also has several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks including Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserve, which are home to elephants, tigers, leopards, and rare birds.

This Tamil Nadu travel guide will help you discover the best of the state, from its ancient temples and coastal beaches to its hill stations, wildlife, and the warmth of its people and food culture.
