Uppiliappan Temple

Located in Thirunageswaram village near Kozhikode, Uppiliyappan Temple is a revered Hindu temple. Also known as the Thiruvinanagara of Venkatachalapati Temple, the temple houses Lord Vishnu and is built in the Dravidian style of architecture. Glorified in the popular Tamil work- Divya Prabandha, the temple is counted as the 60th among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu is worshiped as Lord Uppiliappan and his consort Lakshmi as the land god. The construction of the temple is believed to have started during the reign of the medieval Cholas in the 8th century AD.

Located in the holy village of Patteshwaram in Kumbakonam, Thenupureeswarar Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to have been built during the reign of the Cholas, the current permanent structure was completed by the Nayaks in the 16th century. The magnificent temple is presided over by the lingam of Thennupureeswarar (Lord Shiva) and has an additional shrine for his consort- Goddess Parvati. Spread over an area of four acres, the temple has a seven-tiered gopuram and attractive architectural features. Apart from the major shrines of Thennupureeswarar (Shiva), Nyanambikai (Parvati), and Durga, the temple also houses idols of many other Hindu gods and incarnations including Ganesha, Saptamatha, Mahalakshmi, Renuka, Navagraha, Surya, Chandra, and Bhairav.

The temple is built in such a way that it allows sunlight to fall on the sanctum sanctorum for only three days during the months of April or May. Devotees from all over the world come these days to seek the blessings of the deity. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Nagraj Nagraj. There is a huge lingam in the inner sanctum. It is believed that the temple got its name because a serpent was found worshiping the lingam.

This temple is one of the seven major Shiva temples and this particular lingam is the focal point of the seven wives of Shiva. Mahalingeshwara temple has an honorable mention in a 7th-century Tamil Shiva canonical work called Theevaram.

Built during the time of the medieval Cholas, the temple boasts of striking architectural prowess with five tiered gopurams and two complexes. The construction of the temple is believed to have been completed during the Vijayanagara period and has since been known by various names including Palasavanam, Brahmapuri, Agnistalam and Neelakudi.

Spread over a sprawling 2.84 hectares, the reserve has been set up within the Shiva temple complex and was declared as the country's first conservation reserve on February 14, 2005. The reserve was born as a joint community effort to protect wildlife and birds. in the area and is currently managed and maintained by the local village community and Tamil Nadu Forest Department.

His consort- Goddess Lakshmi is seated in the chamber next to the presiding deity, and is known as Vedavalli. Lord Brahma is seated in the temple adjacent to the sanctum sanctorum on the right. The temple is popularly known as Brahma Mandir as it is one of only two temples dedicated to Brahma in the world. The temple presents Lord Brahma in a four-faced figure, the front face and two adjacent faces are open to display, however, the back face is that of a woman, which can only be seen in that mirror.

Part of the popular trio known as the Great Living Chola Temple with the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur and the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the Airavatesvara Temple was built by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE. Presided over by the Hindu god Lord Shiva, the temple is one of the eighteen medieval age Hindu temples in the Kumbakonam region. The temple displays the feet of Vaishnavism and Shaktism of Hinduism and the traditional Nayanar- Bhakti saints of Shaivism.

It was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century CE and renovated in the 16th century AD by Govinda Dikshitar, the chieftain of the Achyuta Nayaks of Thanjavur. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
