Located in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, it is the site of the ancient capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, which was once one of the richest and most powerful kingdoms in the world. At its peak in the 14th and 15th centuries, Vijayanagara was described by travelers as larger than Rome, with a population of several hundred thousand people and markets filled with diamonds, spices, and silks. In 1565, the city was sacked and destroyed by a confederation of Deccan Sultanates, and what remains today is a vast, haunting landscape of ruins spread across a surreal terrain of enormous boulders that look as though they were placed there by giants.
Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers an area of about 41 square kilometers. The ruins include the magnificent Virupaksha Temple, which is still an active place of worship and towers over the main bazaar street. The Vittala Temple complex, with its famous Stone Chariot and the musical pillars of its main hall that produce different musical notes when tapped, is one of the finest examples of Vijayanagara architecture. The Royal Enclosure contains the remains of palaces, elephant stables, a stepped tank, and the stunning Lotus Mahal pavilion. The Hemakuta Hill is dotted with dozens of small temples and offers panoramic views over the entire ruins landscape. Exploring Hampi is unlike visiting any other historical site in India. You wander between boulders, crossing paddy fields and banana plantations, stumbling upon ancient temples and carved reliefs in the most unexpected places.
Hampi also has a charming traveler community centered around Virupapur Gadde (Hippie Island) across the river, which offers guesthouses, cafes, and a relaxed atmosphere that has attracted backpackers and budget travelers for decades. This Hampi travel guide covers the best time to visit, the top monuments to see, how to get around, and travel tips for an unforgettable journey into one of India's greatest lost cities.
Winter (October to March)
October to March is the best and only truly recommended time to visit Hampi. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable to walk between the ruins and explore the boulder landscape. The ancient monuments look their finest in the clear winter light and the surrounding landscape of the Tungabhadra River valley is green and beautiful after the monsoon. November to February are the peak months and the site is most visited during this period. The Hampi Utsav (Vijayanagara Festival) held in November is a spectacular three-day cultural celebration with classical dance, music, and processions set against the backdrop of the ruins.
Summer (April to June)
Summers in Hampi are extremely hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The boulder landscape absorbs and radiates heat intensely, making it very uncomfortable to walk around the extensive ruins during daytime. If you must visit in summer, restrict your exploration to the early morning and late afternoon hours.
Monsoon (July to September)
The monsoon brings rain to Hampi and the surrounding landscape turns green. The ruins have a mysterious, mist-touched quality during this period and crowds are very thin. However, some low-lying areas near the river can flood and the dirt paths between monuments become muddy and difficult. The Hippie Island across the river is cut off by the rising Tungabhadra during peak monsoon months.
