Coorg Travel Guide

Coorg, officially known as Kodagu, is a hilly district in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and one of the most naturally beautiful and serene destinations in South India. Often called the Scotland of India for its misty rolling hills, cool climate, and lush green landscapes, Coorg is a place that invites slow travel and deep relaxation. It is a land of coffee and spice plantations that stretch across the hillsides in rich, fragrant carpades of green, of fast-flowing rivers and small waterfalls tucked into the forests, and of a proud warrior community called the Kodavas who have a distinct culture, cuisine, and tradition of their own.

Madikeri (Mercara) is the main town and district headquarters of Coorg and serves as the base for most visitors. It has a small but well-preserved Madikeri Fort, a scenic Raja's Seat viewpoint that offers beautiful views over the surrounding hills and valleys, and a pleasant market area. The Abbey Falls, about 10 kilometers from Madikeri, is a beautiful waterfall set in the middle of a coffee plantation and is one of the most visited natural attractions in Coorg. The Nagarhole National Park (Rajiv Gandhi National Park), located on the border of Coorg and Mysuru district, is an outstanding wildlife reserve that is part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is home to tigers, leopards, elephants, gaur, and a remarkable variety of bird species.

Coorg is also known for its unique Kodava cuisine, which features rice, pork, and locally grown spices in dishes that are deeply flavorful and distinctive from other South Indian food traditions. Staying at one of Coorg's many plantation homestays, where you wake up to the smell of coffee and birdsong, is one of the finest rural travel experiences in India. This Coorg travel guide covers the best time to visit, top experiences, and all the information you need to plan a relaxing and rewarding trip.

Best time to Visit Coorg

Winter (October to March)

October to March is the best time to visit Coorg. The weather after the monsoon is cool and fresh, with temperatures ranging from around 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. The coffee estates are at their most aromatic and active during the coffee blossom season in February and March, when the white flowers of the coffee plants cover the plantations and fill the air with a jasmine-like fragrance. This is also the best time for wildlife safaris in Nagarhole National Park and for trekking in the surrounding hills. The Coorg Monsoon Walk is a popular event held during this season. December and January are the coolest months and are perfect for long walks through the plantations and forests.

Summer (April to May)

April and May are warm in Coorg but still manageable compared to the plains. The forests are dry but the plantations are green. This is a popular time for visitors from the coast and the Deccan Plateau looking to escape the summer heat.

Monsoon (June to September)

Coorg receives very heavy monsoon rainfall, making it one of the wettest districts in Karnataka. The forests and plantations turn a deep, rich green and the waterfalls are at their most beautiful. However, roads can become difficult and some areas may be inaccessible. Plantation homestays that remain open during the monsoon offer a very peaceful and immersive experience for travelers who love rain and the outdoors.
