Located in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, the park covers about 874 square kilometers and is part of the vast Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which also includes Nagarhole, Mudumalai, Wayanad, Mukurthi, and several other protected areas across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Together, this connected forest landscape is home to one of the largest wild elephant populations in Asia and a significant number of tigers and leopards.
Bandipur is known for its open, dry deciduous forests that make wildlife spotting relatively easier compared to denser jungle parks. The landscape is a mix of grasslands, scrub forest, teak and rosewood trees, and seasonal streams that attract large concentrations of wildlife. Elephants are the undisputed highlight of a Bandipur safari, and it is not uncommon to encounter herds of 20 to 50 or even more wild elephants at a time, which is a breathtaking and humbling experience. The park is also home to tigers, leopards, dholes (Indian wild dogs), gaur (Indian bison), sambar, chital, four-horned antelope, and a remarkable variety of birds including the rare Indian grey hornbill and the crested serpent eagle. The park is managed strictly with no tourist vehicles allowed after dark, which has helped preserve its natural character.
This Bandipur National Park travel guide covers the best time to visit, how to book safaris, where to stay, and all the essential information you need to plan a rewarding wildlife experience in this outstanding South Indian reserve.
Winter (October to February)
October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Bandipur. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 28 degrees Celsius, making it very comfortable for open jeep safaris. Wildlife activity is high during this period and elephants are frequently spotted near water sources and open grasslands. Tiger and leopard sightings also increase in frequency during the cooler months. The vegetation is moderately thick in October and November but thins progressively through winter, improving visibility.
Summer (March to May)
March to May is an excellent time for tiger and leopard sightings as the dry heat drives animals to water sources. The vegetation is sparse and open sightlines make photography rewarding. Temperatures can reach up to 35 degrees Celsius in April and May but the mornings and evenings are still very pleasant for safaris.
Monsoon (June to September)
Bandipur receives moderate monsoon rainfall and remains open during the monsoon season, unlike many northern parks. The forests become green and lush and the landscape is beautiful. However, wildlife is more dispersed as water is available throughout the forest, making sightings less predictable. Some trails within the park may be temporarily closed during heavy rainfall.
