We had a memorable time in Delhi and Agra, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the city and the countryside as we traveled between the two cities. The sites were amazing, as expected, and our guides were able and helpful in explaining what we were seeing and answering our many questions. They did a great job of ensuring we were able to get great photos as well along the way.

Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Hiking and Trekking Travel FAQs

At Alkof Holidays, we recommend several world-class trekking regions. The Himalayas offer routes like the Everest Base Camp trek in Sikkim and Roopkund Lake trek in Uttarakhand. Kashmir features the Great Lakes trek and Tarsar Marsar circuit. For beginners, we arrange treks in the Western Ghats including Hampta Pass in Himachal Pradesh and treks around Munnar in Kerala. Each region has distinct terrain and difficulty levels. Mountain treks require October to June timing, while southern hill station treks work year-round except monsoons. We match trek difficulty to your experience level and fitness.
Trekking seasons vary by region. For Himalayan treks, we recommend April to June and September to November. Snow blocks high passes December through March. Monsoons from July to August make trails slippery and dangerous. Western Ghats treks work best October to March when temperatures stay comfortable. Kerala and Tamil Nadu hills are good year-round except heavy monsoon months. We avoid July to September for most mountain treks due to landslide risks. Each trek has a specific weather window. Our team provides detailed timing recommendations based on your chosen route and current conditions.
Trek duration depends on your chosen route and fitness level. Day hikes around hill stations need just one day. Popular multi-day treks range from 3 to 14 days. The Everest Base Camp trek from Sikkim takes 12 days. Hampta Pass requires 5 days. Roopkund Lake needs 8 days. We add buffer days for weather delays on high-altitude routes. Most clients spend 7 to 10 days total including travel time to trailheads. First-time trekkers often start with 3 to 5 day routes. We customize duration based on your available time and experience level.
Fitness requirements vary significantly by trek difficulty. Easy day hikes need basic walking ability. Moderate treks like Triund require regular exercise and ability to walk 6 to 8 hours daily. Challenging high-altitude routes demand excellent cardiovascular fitness and prior trekking experience. We recommend starting cardio training 2 months before your trip. Include uphill walking with a backpack. Practice hiking boots to avoid blisters. Medical clearance helps for treks above 3,500 meters altitude. Our team assesses your fitness during trip planning and suggests appropriate routes. Most healthy adults can complete moderate treks with proper preparation.
Essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, rain jacket, sleeping bag rated for expected temperatures, and daypack. We provide detailed packing lists specific to your trek and season. High-altitude treks need warm layers, gloves, and sun protection. Monsoon season requires waterproof everything. Personal items include first aid supplies, water purification tablets, headlamp, and trekking poles. We arrange group gear like tents and cooking equipment. Most airlines allow 23kg checked bags which covers personal trekking gear. Local purchases in Delhi or Mumbai can supplement missing items. Our team reviews your packing list before departure.
Many trekking areas require permits, especially near international borders. Sikkim needs special permits for all visitors. Ladakh requires inner line permits for certain valleys. Some national parks charge entry fees and require advance booking. We handle all permit applications as part of our service. Applications need passport copies and photos submitted 15 to 30 days before travel. Restricted areas like Nanda Devi require special permissions that take longer. Foreign nationals need different permits than Indian citizens. Our local expertise ensures you have proper documentation. We track permit requirements and application deadlines for each trek route.
Trekking safety depends on route choice, preparation, and local conditions. Popular trails with established infrastructure like those around Manali are relatively safe. Remote high-altitude routes need experienced guides and proper gear. We never recommend solo trekking on technical routes or during monsoons. Weather changes rapidly in mountains. Our guided treks include safety equipment, first aid trained guides, and emergency communication devices. We maintain radio contact with base camps. Solo hikers should inform local authorities about their plans and carry emergency beacons. Group treks provide much better safety margins than independent travel.
Food varies between tea house treks and camping expeditions. Popular routes have local guesthouses serving dal, rice, vegetables, and simple pasta dishes. Remote camping treks include cook staff preparing fresh meals from carried supplies. Breakfast typically includes porridge, eggs, and tea. Lunch might be packed sandwiches or hot meals depending on the route. Dinner features local curries, lentils, and rice. We accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice. Vegetarian options are always available. Water purification tablets or filters are essential. Some areas have bottled water, others require treating local sources. Our cooks understand international dietary needs and food safety.
Absolutely. India offers excellent beginner-friendly treks with gradual difficulty progression. We recommend starting with day hikes around hill stations like Shimla or Munnar. Easy multi-day options include Triund near Dharamshala and Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand. These routes have established trails, regular water sources, and nearby medical help. Beginner treks stay below 3,000 meters altitude to avoid serious altitude issues. We provide pre-trek briefings covering safety, gear use, and mountain etiquette. Experienced guides accompany all groups. Many clients progress from easy day hikes to challenging high-altitude expeditions over multiple trips. Starting with appropriate difficulty builds confidence and skills safely.
Hiking typically refers to day walks on established trails, often returning to the same accommodation each night. Popular hiking areas include hill stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Shimla. These involve 2 to 6 hour walks on marked paths. Trekking involves multi-day journeys through wilderness areas, camping or staying in basic mountain huts. Treks cross multiple terrain types and often involve significant elevation changes. Examples include the Annapurna Circuit approach from Sikkim or Kashmir Great Lakes circuit. Trekking requires more gear, planning, and physical preparation. Both activities offer different ways to experience India's mountain regions. We arrange both depending on your time and adventure level preferences.
