We had a memorable time in Delhi and Agra, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the city and the countryside as we traveled between the two cities. The sites were amazing, as expected, and our guides were able and helpful in explaining what we were seeing and answering our many questions. They did a great job of ensuring we were able to get great photos as well along the way.

Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Solo Travel Travel FAQs

India is generally safe for solo travellers who take standard precautions. Millions visit independently each year. Common-sense safety applies: avoid isolated areas after dark, keep valuables secure, and trust your instincts. Women travelling alone should dress modestly and choose reputable accommodations. At Alkof Holidays, we provide 24/7 local support and emergency contacts throughout your journey. Our local teams know each destination well and can guide you on specific safety considerations for different regions.
Two weeks minimum for your first solo India trip. This gives you time to adjust and explore 3-4 destinations comfortably. Three weeks allows deeper exploration of regions like Rajasthan or Kerala. First-timers often underestimate travel distances and adjustment time. We recommend starting with the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) for 7-8 days, then adding one region like Kerala or Rajasthan. Our travel experts design itineraries that balance must-see sights with manageable travel schedules for solo travellers.
October to March offers the best weather for solo travel across most of India. Temperatures are comfortable for walking and sightseeing. April and May can be extremely hot, especially in northern plains. June to September brings monsoon rains to many regions, though Kerala and Goa are beautiful during this time. For solo travellers, good weather means easier navigation and more comfortable exploration. We help you choose the right months based on your chosen destinations and activities.
Expect curiosity from locals, especially in smaller towns. Many Indians will want to chat and help with directions. Food is generally safe if you choose busy restaurants and avoid street water. Transport is extensive but can be crowded. You'll likely make friends with other travellers in guesthouses and tourist areas. Language barriers exist outside major cities, though many Indians speak some English. At Alkof Holidays, we prepare you with cultural insights and practical tips specific to each destination on your itinerary.
Start with Rajasthan or Kerala for easier solo travel. Rajasthan offers good tourist infrastructure, English-speaking locals, and clear sightseeing routes. Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur are solo-friendly with plenty of other travellers. Kerala provides relaxed backwater experiences and Ayurvedic retreats perfect for solo reflection. The Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) remains popular for good reason. Avoid remote mountain regions or isolated rural areas for your first solo trip. We design first-timer routes with reliable transport and accommodation options.
Most nationalities need a visa for India. The e-Visa system makes applications straightforward for tourists from eligible countries. Tourist e-Visas are valid for 30, 90, or 365 days depending on your nationality. Apply online at least 4 days before travel. You'll need a passport valid for 6 months, recent photo, and return flight details. Some nationalities require traditional visas from consulates. At Alkof Holidays, we guide you through visa requirements specific to your nationality and travel dates.
Trains are the backbone of solo travel in India. Book online through IRCTC or use our booking assistance for sleeper classes. Domestic flights save time for longer distances. Private taxis work well for short distances and sightseeing. Auto-rickshaws are common in cities but negotiate fares beforehand. Avoid night buses for safety and comfort. Apps like Ola and Uber work in major cities. We arrange reliable transport options and provide local contact numbers for each leg of your journey.
Stick to busy restaurants with high turnover for the freshest food. Vegetarian options are widely available and often safer for sensitive stomachs. Avoid raw salads, ice in drinks, and street food initially until your stomach adjusts. Bottled water is essential. South Indian food tends to be less spicy than North Indian. Hotel restaurants and popular tourist spots maintain good hygiene standards. Street food can be amazing once you know what to choose. We provide dining recommendations and food safety tips for each destination you'll visit.
Pack light and leave room for shopping. Modest clothing is essential - long pants, covered shoulders, and comfortable walking shoes. Bring a scarf for covering head/shoulders at religious sites. Hand sanitiser, mosquito repellent, and basic medical supplies are important. A good daypack for sightseeing and a padlock for hostel lockers. Power bank for your phone and universal adapter. Quick-dry towel and flip-flops for budget accommodations. We provide detailed packing lists tailored to your travel season and chosen destinations.
Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Cover your head at Sikh gurudwaras and some temples. Use your right hand for eating and giving/receiving items. Avoid pointing feet toward people or religious objects. Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Learn basic greetings like 'namaste' and 'dhanyawad' (thank you). Tipping is customary for services. Dress conservatively, especially at religious sites. Our local guides explain customs specific to each region and help you navigate cultural situations respectfully.
