South India Travel Guide

South India is a travel region unlike any other in the country. It is a land of ancient Dravidian civilization, towering temple gopurams, lush green landscapes, long coastlines, spice-scented hills, and a food culture that is loved across the world. The region covers the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, as well as the union territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep. Together, these destinations form one of the most culturally rich and naturally diverse travel regions in Asia.

South India is home to some of the oldest living temple traditions in the world. The temples of Tamil Nadu, including the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, are architectural wonders that have been in continuous worship for over a thousand years. Kerala's backwaters, spice plantations, and Ayurvedic wellness culture attract travelers from across the globe. Karnataka's ruins of Hampi and the royal city of Mysuru are highlights of any South India itinerary. The coastlines of Andhra Pradesh and the Deccan Plateau landscapes of Telangana add further depth to the region's travel appeal.

This South India travel guide covers all the key information you need to explore this wonderful region, including the best time to visit, top destinations, travel themes, and tour packages for first-timers and seasoned travelers alike.

Best time to Visit South India

Winter (October to February)

Winter is the best time to visit South India for most travelers. The weather across the region is dry and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 32 degrees Celsius in most places. This is the ideal season for temple tours in Tamil Nadu, houseboat cruises in Kerala, wildlife safaris in Karnataka and Kerala, and heritage tours in Hampi and Mysuru. The famous Pongal festival in January and the Mysuru Dasara in October are excellent reasons to visit during this season.

Summer (March to May)

Summers in coastal South India are warm and humid. However, the Nilgiri Hills (Ooty, Kodaikanal), Coorg, Munnar, and Wayanad remain cool and green, making them popular summer escapes. This is also a good time to visit certain temple festivals that take place in April and May.

Monsoon (June to September)

South India receives two monsoons. The southwest monsoon hits Kerala and Karnataka hard from June onwards, making the Western Ghats incredibly lush. The northeast monsoon affects Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh between October and December. While travel can be challenging during heavy rain periods, the landscapes are beautiful and tourist crowds are thinner.
