It covers the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, a vast stretch of land that encompasses ancient temple cities, tiger-rich forests, tribal heartlands, and some of the most impressive medieval architecture in India. The region is often overlooked in favor of more popular destinations, but those who do visit are consistently rewarded with authentic experiences and incredible natural and cultural wealth.
Madhya Pradesh is home to an extraordinary collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Khajuraho temples, known for their intricate and expressive stone sculptures, are among the finest examples of medieval Indian temple architecture. The Buddhist stupas of Sanchi date back to the time of Emperor Ashoka and are a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The ruins of Mandu and the ancient cave art of Bhimbetka add further historical depth. Madhya Pradesh is also called the Tiger State of India, with more tigers than any other state in the country. National parks like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Panna are among the best tiger safari destinations in the world.
Chhattisgarh is a state of dense forests, tribal communities, and stunning waterfalls. It is one of the least explored states in India and offers a truly offbeat experience for adventurous travelers.
This Central India travel guide will help you discover the hidden treasures of this fascinating region, from wildlife safaris and ancient temples to tribal culture and natural wonders.
Winter (October to March)
Winter is the best time to visit Central India. The weather is cool and dry, making it ideal for both wildlife safaris and sightseeing at historical sites. National parks are in full operation during this season and tiger sightings are more frequent as animals come out to bask in the sun and drink at water holes. The Khajuraho Dance Festival held in February is a spectacular cultural event set against the backdrop of the illuminated temples. Sanchi, Mandu, and Bhimbetka are all best visited in the winter months.
Summer (April to June)
April and May can be very hot in Central India, but this is actually one of the best times for tiger safaris. As temperatures rise and water sources dry up, tigers and other animals concentrate near the remaining water holes, making sightings more frequent. Most national parks close in June for the monsoon season.
Monsoon (July to September)
Most national parks in Central India are closed during the monsoon. The forests become dense and beautiful, and the waterfalls of Chhattisgarh, including the magnificent Chitrakoot Falls, are at their most powerful. This is a good time to explore temples and heritage sites, which remain open through the monsoon.
By Air
Central India is well-connected by air, with several major airports serving the region. Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal, and Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore are the primary entry points. These airports offer regular domestic flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, making air travel a convenient option for reaching Central India. Additionally, some airports provide international connections, enabling travelers from abroad to access the region with ease.
By Train
Central India has an extensive railway network, making it accessible by train from various parts of the country. Major railway stations, such as Bhopal Junction, Indore Junction, and Raipur Junction, are well-connected to key cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. Traveling by train offers a scenic experience, allowing passengers to enjoy the diverse landscapes of the region while providing an economical and comfortable way to reach their destination.
By Road
Traveling by road is another popular option for reaching Central India. The region is well-connected by a network of national highways, making it easily accessible from neighboring states. Travelers can opt for private vehicles, taxis, or buses to explore the area at their own pace. Popular routes connect cities like Bhopal, Indore, and Raipur, allowing visitors to enjoy the picturesque landscapes and local attractions along the way.
A tiger sighting turned into a 45-minute standoff with a wild tusker, the real story from our June 2026 Bandhavgarh safari.
Discover which National Park gives you the best tiger sighting chances in Central India. Is it Bandhavgarh, Panna, Kanha, or Pench?
Our ground team inspected four Central India tiger reserves in June 2026. Here is what we found.
Mid-March to June brings peak tiger sightings across Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench, and Panna as water sources shrink.
What we can tell you from our own ground experience is this: Kanha National Park had a very difficult 2025-2026 season. Around 10 tigers were lost due to a health crisis inside the park. The Kanha forest department worked hard to contain the situation and stopped it from spreading further, which was genuinely well handled. But the loss of around 10 tigers in a single season has had a direct impact on sighting frequency, and the park has not yet recovered to where it was. This is not information you will find on any booking website. We know it because our naturalists are in that forest every day and we do these safaris as part of our daily work.
Bandhavgarh and Panna are currently giving the most consistent tiger sightings in Central India. Pench continues to deliver good sightings depending on the zone. Kanha is still worth visiting for its landscape, its open grasslands, and the overall wildlife experience, but if a tiger sighting is your main priority and you have limited days, we will tell you that honestly and plan your itinerary around it.
