Munnar Travel Guide

Munnar is a hill station in the Idukki district of Kerala, sitting at an altitude of about 1,600 meters in the Western Ghats. It is one of the most beautiful and serene destinations in South India and is perhaps best known for its endless stretches of tea plantations that cover the rolling hills in a rich carpet of green. The name Munnar means three rivers in Malayalam, referring to the confluence of the three mountain streams, Madupetty, Nallathanni, and Kundaly, near the town center. The combination of cool misty weather, scenic tea estates, winding mountain roads, and quiet forests makes Munnar a deeply calming and restorative destination.

The tea estates around Munnar are managed largely by the Tata Tea company and spread across thousands of acres of hillside. Visiting a tea factory to understand how the leaves are processed from plucking to packaging is one of the most popular activities in Munnar. The Tea Museum near Nallathanni Estate gives a detailed look at the history of tea cultivation in the Nilgiris and the region's colonial-era heritage. The Eravikulam National Park, just 15 kilometers from Munnar, is home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found only in the Nilgiri Hills, and is also one of the few places in India where you might witness the rare blooming of the Neelakurinji flower, which blooms only once every 12 years and turns the hillsides blue. The Mattupetty Dam and Lake and the Kundala Lake are scenic spots near Munnar that are popular for boating and nature walks.

This Munnar travel guide covers the best time to visit, top attractions and experiences, and travel tips to help you plan a relaxing and memorable stay in this beautiful hill station.

Best time to Visit Munnar

Winter (September to March)

This is the best time to visit Munnar. The monsoon ends in September and the hills are lush, fresh, and incredibly green. October to March brings clear, cool, and comfortable weather with temperatures ranging from 5 to 20 degrees Celsius. The tea estates look their best in the bright winter sunlight and the misty mornings in the hills are magical. December and January nights can be cold, dropping to around 5 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing is a must for an evening walk or an early morning excursion. This is the peak tourist season and accommodation should be booked well in advance during the Christmas and New Year period.

Summer (April to June)

April and May are also pleasant in Munnar, as the hill station remains cooler than the rest of Kerala even as summer arrives on the coast. Temperatures range from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. This is a popular time for families and couples looking to escape the heat of the plains and the coast. The tea estates are actively harvesting during this period and the landscape is vibrant and alive.

Monsoon (June to August)

Munnar receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon. The hills become deeply green and the waterfalls in the area are at their most spectacular. However, roads can be slippery and misty, and some areas may be inaccessible. The monsoon has a certain romantic and atmospheric quality in the hills and travelers who enjoy rain and do not have tight sightseeing schedules can have a very peaceful experience in Munnar during this time.
