Andaman and Nicobar Islands Travel Guide

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a union territory of India located in the Bay of Bengal, about 1,400 kilometers from the Indian mainland. They are one of the most pristine and naturally beautiful island destinations in Asia, offering white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, dense tropical rainforests, and some of the best coral reefs and scuba diving sites in the Indian Ocean. For anyone seeking a tropical island escape that still feels unspoiled and uncrowded compared to other popular beach destinations, the Andamans are an outstanding choice.

The island chain consists of over 500 islands, of which only a few dozen are inhabited and even fewer are open to tourists. Port Blair, the capital, is the main entry point and is home to the historic Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, where Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned during British rule. The Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) has been consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in Asia. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) is a quieter and more laid-back alternative with beautiful natural formations and calm bays. The waters around these islands offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling, scuba diving, sea walking, and kayaking.

This Andaman and Nicobar Islands travel guide covers the best time to visit, top islands and beaches to explore, water sports, and travel tips including important permit information for visiting this remarkable destination.

Best time to Visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Winter (October to May)

The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is between November and April. The weather is sunny and dry, the sea is calm, and visibility underwater for diving and snorkeling is at its best. Temperatures remain around 23 to 30 degrees Celsius throughout this period. December and January are the peak months when the islands are busiest. February and March offer the best underwater visibility for diving and are excellent months for those focused on water sports and marine experiences.

Shoulder Season (October and May)

October marks the end of the monsoon and the sea begins to calm down. May is still manageable before the monsoon sets in fully. These months offer good value with fewer tourists and reasonable weather for most activities.

Monsoon (June to September)

The monsoon season brings rough seas, strong winds, and heavy rainfall to the Andaman Islands. Inter-island ferry services are frequently disrupted and many water sports activities are suspended for safety reasons. Travel to the islands during this period is generally not recommended.
