Manali Travel Guide

Manali is one of the most popular and beloved hill stations in India, located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of about 2,050 meters in the Beas River valley. It sits at the northern end of the Kullu Valley and serves as the starting point for some of the most dramatic mountain journeys in the country, including the road to Ladakh via the Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La and the route to the remote and stunning Spiti Valley. Manali is a town that appeals to a very wide range of travelers, from families and honeymooners looking for cool mountain air and scenic beauty to adventure seekers looking for trekking, skiing, paragliding, and river rafting.

The town is divided into two distinct areas. Old Manali, perched on a hill above the main town, has a charming and slightly bohemian character with guesthouses, cafes, apple orchards, and a local village atmosphere centered around the ancient Manu Maharishi Temple. The main town has all the modern amenities, hotels, restaurants, and shops that travelers need. The Hadimba Devi Temple, a beautiful wooden temple surrounded by old cedar trees and dedicated to the goddess Hadimba, is one of the most visited and photographed landmarks in Manali. Solang Valley, about 14 kilometers from Manali, is famous for skiing in winter and paragliding in summer. Rohtang Pass at 3,978 meters, when open, offers a stunning high-altitude experience with snow even in summer and views of the higher Himalayan peaks. The Beas River flowing through the valley is ideal for white-water rafting during summer.

This Manali travel guide covers the best time to visit, top attractions, adventure activities, day trip options, and travel tips to help you plan a great trip to this iconic Himalayan destination.

Best time to Visit Manali

Summer (March to June)

Summer is the most popular time to visit Manali and the best season for most activities. The weather is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius, making it a perfect escape from the heat of the plains. Solang Valley is excellent for paragliding and other adventure sports during this season. The road to Rohtang Pass opens in May and the Leh-Manali highway becomes accessible, making Manali the starting point for one of the most exciting road trips in India. The Beas River is ideal for rafting in summer. May and June are peak season and the town gets very busy, so booking in advance is strongly recommended.

Winter (November to February)

Winter in Manali is cold with heavy snowfall, with temperatures dropping to minus 10 degrees Celsius or below in January. Solang Valley becomes a popular skiing and snow sports destination during this time. The town itself looks magical under snow. However, the Rohtang Pass and roads to Spiti and Ladakh close completely in winter. This is a quieter time in Manali with a peaceful, snow-covered atmosphere that many visitors find deeply enjoyable.

Autumn (September to October)

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Manali. The monsoon has cleared, the skies are bright, and the valley is green and beautiful. Mountain views are at their clearest during autumn and the weather is comfortable before winter sets in. This is a good time for trekking in the surrounding valleys.

Monsoon (July to August)

Manali receives moderate monsoon rainfall. The valley is lush and green but landslides can occasionally affect roads, particularly those going to Rohtang Pass and Spiti. Travel during the monsoon is possible but requires flexibility.
