Sunil from Alkof Holidays provided endless support, updated correspondence and with first class service on our trip in India. From the time we booked until our goodbyes at the airport, I could not fault this tour. All the guides, drivers and representatives did an amazing job to accommodate us and our needs. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with an enormous smile. Sunil even organised an additional tour and an additional safari we requested. It was done quickly and efficiently and made our tour amazing. The wildlife we saw was unbelievable!!!!’ We were surprised with every safari, we had the best viewings that well exceeded our expectations. Our transport, accommodation and food was of a high standard.

Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

Lion Safari Travel FAQs
Asiatic lions live only in Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, India. This 1,412 square kilometer protected area is the last place on Earth where these lions exist in the wild. The park covers dry deciduous forests, grasslands, and scrublands - perfect habitat for these big cats. Around 29 villages exist within the sanctuary boundaries, creating a unique human-wildlife coexistence model. At Alkof Holidays, we arrange guided safaris through different zones of Gir to maximize your chances of spotting these rare lions.
Asiatic lions are famous because they're one of the world's rarest big cats, found only in one location on Earth. Once roaming from Turkey to India, hunting and habitat loss reduced them to just 20 individuals in the 1900s. Their recovery to 674 lions represents one of conservation's greatest success stories. Physical differences from African lions include smaller manes, a distinctive belly fold, and slightly smaller size. They hold deep cultural significance in Indian heritage, appearing on the national emblem and currency. At Alkof Holidays, our naturalist guides explain these unique characteristics during your Gir safari experience.
Safari permits for Satpura Tiger Reserve can be booked online through the official forest department portal up to 120 days in advance. Morning and afternoon slots are available with separate entry gates. Tours typically include advance permit booking, forest guide assignment, and vehicle arrangements. Peak season bookings from December to April fill quickly.
A lion safari in India means visiting Gir National Park in Gujarat to see Asiatic lions in their natural habitat. These safaris happen in open-top jeeps that take you through designated forest routes over 2-3 hours. Unlike African safaris, Indian lion safaris focus specifically on the last remaining population of Asiatic lions - about 674 individuals. The experience includes spotting lions, leopards, deer, and over 300 bird species. At Alkof Holidays, we book your safari permits in advance and provide experienced naturalist guides who know the best spots for lion sightings.
A minimum of 2 days allows for 3-4 safari sessions, significantly improving your chances of spotting Asiatic lions. Most visitors stay 3 days for 5-6 safaris across different zones like Sasan, Devalia, and Kamleshwar. Each safari lasts 3 hours with morning sessions starting at 6 AM and evening sessions at 2:30 PM. The park offers both jeep safaris and the Devalia Safari Park for guaranteed lion sightings. At Alkof Holidays, we typically recommend 3 days to explore multiple zones and include cultural visits to nearby Somnath Temple.
Gir National Park hosts over 38 mammal species beyond Asiatic lions. Indian leopards, spotted deer, sambar, nilgai, and wild boar are commonly sighted. The park shelters 300+ bird species including crested serpent eagles, painted storks, and paradise flycatchers. Marsh crocodiles inhabit the Kamleshwar Dam area. You might spot striped hyenas, jackals, and jungle cats during night safaris. The diverse landscape ranges from teak forests to grasslands supporting this rich wildlife. At Alkof Holidays, we arrange safaris across different zones to maximize wildlife encounters beyond just lion sightings.
Safari permits must be booked online through the Gujarat Forest Department website or at the park office. Permits are released 120 days in advance and often sell out quickly during peak season. You need to provide ID proof and choose specific time slots and zones. Indian citizens pay different rates than foreign nationals. The booking system opens at 6 AM daily for new date releases. At Alkof Holidays, we handle all permit bookings as part of your package, securing your preferred dates and safari zones well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Pack neutral-colored clothing in khaki, brown, or olive green to blend with the forest environment. Bright colors can disturb wildlife and are discouraged. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection during open jeep safaris. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are essential for walking in the forest. Carry a good camera with zoom lens, extra batteries, and memory cards. Binoculars enhance wildlife viewing experience. Include insect repellent, a light jacket for early morning safaris, and a water bottle. At Alkof Holidays, we provide a detailed packing checklist with your safari booking confirmation.
