Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

We had to alter our plans and extended the tour for 2 more days. From second day we started our sightseeing of Delhi, next day visited Agra, then Fatehpur Sikri and then Jaipur. The driver and the local guides were punctual, polite, and worked very hard to make our trip enjoyable. Sachin made sure we saw everything on our bucket list. I recommend Alkof Holidays, thank you so much.

Alkof Holidays has an outstanding team of highly knowledgeable tour managers who are passionate about the regions they cover. They promptly answered all my questions before finalizing the tour and made all the necessary changes to suit my requirements. The accommodations were excellent, and both our driver, Manoj, and guide, Sachin, were incredibly kind, supportive, and well-versed in all aspects of the tour, from geography to history. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the Indian Golden Triangle and look forward to visiting India again soon. I highly recommend Alkof Holidays for India tours. Cheers, David.

Sarnath Travel FAQs

Sarnath is where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, making it one of Buddhism's four most sacred sites. The Archaeological Museum houses original sculptures and artifacts from ancient monasteries. Most packages combine Sarnath with Varanasi since it sits just 10 kilometers away, making it an easy half-day addition to Golden Triangle or spiritual India tours.
Sarnath requires half a day to cover the main sites. Most tours spend 3-4 hours visiting the Dhamek Stupa, Archaeological Museum, and ruins of ancient monasteries. Since it's located near Varanasi, packages typically include Sarnath as part of a Varanasi day or combine it with other nearby Buddhist sites like Bodhgaya in longer itineraries.

The best time to visit Sarnath is during the winter months, from October to February, when the weather is cool and pleasant with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 25°C. This period, considered the high season, offers an ideal climate for exploring Sarnath's historical and spiritual landmarks in comfort. The serene ambiance and influx of visitors during this time enhance the charm of the experience, making it perfect for both sightseeing and spiritual reflection.

The Dhamek Stupa marks where Buddha preached his first sermon. The Archaeological Museum displays the famous Lion Capital that became India's national emblem. Ruins of ancient monasteries show where monks lived and studied. The Mulagandha Kuti Vihar temple features modern Buddhist artwork. Most tours also stop at the Bodhi Tree planted from a cutting of the original tree in Bodhgaya.
Sarnath sits 10 kilometers from Varanasi, making Varanasi the main access point. From Delhi, fly to Varanasi then drive 30 minutes to Sarnath. From Kolkata or other eastern cities, train connections through Varanasi work well. Most packages include private transport from Varanasi hotels to Sarnath as part of guided sightseeing since public transport requires multiple connections.
Yes, nearly all packages combine Sarnath with Varanasi since they're only 30 minutes apart. A typical day covers early morning activities in Varanasi, then afternoon sightseeing in Sarnath, or vice versa. Longer itineraries often include both cities with other Buddhist circuit destinations like Bodhgaya and Kushinagar, or combine them with Golden Triangle routes through Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.
No permits are required for Sarnath. Entry tickets are needed for the Archaeological Museum and some temple complexes, which guides arrange during sightseeing. The outdoor ruins and main stupa areas have separate ticketing. Photography fees may apply inside the museum for cameras. All entry arrangements are handled as part of guided tours.
Dress modestly and remove shoes when entering active temples and meditation areas. The atmosphere is generally quiet and contemplative, particularly around the stupa where Buddha first taught. Many Buddhist pilgrims visit throughout the year, creating a peaceful, international environment. Photography is allowed at most outdoor sites but restricted inside some temples and the museum's artifact sections.
Most travelers stay in Varanasi and visit Sarnath as a day trip since accommodation options in Sarnath itself are limited. Varanasi offers hotels near the ghats or in the newer areas of the city. Packages typically include hotels in Varanasi with daily transport to Sarnath included in the sightseeing arrangements.
Bodhgaya where Buddha attained enlightenment lies 6 hours by road from Sarnath. Kushinagar, where Buddha passed away, is 3 hours away. Many Buddhist circuit packages combine all these sites with Lumbini in Nepal. Alternatively, shorter routes pair Sarnath with Varanasi and then connect to Golden Triangle destinations or continue to spiritual sites like Rishikesh or Haridwar.
