Tadoba National Park Travel Guide

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is the largest and oldest national park in Maharashtra and one of the most productive tiger reserves in India. Located in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, the reserve covers a total area of about 1,727 square kilometers, with the core Tadoba National Park covering about 116 square kilometers. In recent years, Tadoba has developed a strong reputation among wildlife enthusiasts for its very high frequency of tiger sightings, earning it the nickname the Land of Tigers. The tigers here are bold, well habituated to safari vehicles, and often seen in open areas near the lakes and roads, making Tadoba one of the best parks in India for tiger photography.

The park gets its name from the god Tadoba, worshipped by the local tribal communities, and the Andhari River that flows through the forest. The landscape of Tadoba is characterized by teak forests, grassy patches, bamboo thickets, and the beautiful Tadoba Lake, which is a central feature of the core zone and a major gathering point for wildlife. Crocodiles are commonly seen sunning themselves on the banks of the lake, and tigers regularly come to drink and are sometimes seen swimming across it. Beyond tigers, the park has a healthy population of leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), gaur, sambar, chital, nilgai, and over 195 species of birds. The park has multiple entry gates including Moharli, Kolara, Navegaon, and Zari, each giving access to different zones of the reserve.

This Tadoba National Park travel guide covers the best time to visit, safari gate options, booking process, and practical travel tips to help you plan a memorable wildlife trip to this outstanding Maharashtra tiger reserve.

Best time to Visit Tadoba National Park

Summer (March to June)

Summer is widely considered the best time to visit Tadoba. As temperatures rise and the water in the forest dries up, tigers and other animals concentrate near the Tadoba Lake and the few remaining water bodies, creating extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities. April and May in particular are exceptional months for tiger sightings, with multiple tigers often spotted on a single safari. Temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius in May but the frequency of wildlife encounters makes the heat worthwhile for serious enthusiasts. The park typically closes in late June for the monsoon.

Winter (October to February)

October to February is also a great time to visit Tadoba. The weather is comfortable and cool, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. The park reopens in October after the monsoon and wildlife is active and visible. Tiger sightings are good during winter and the lush post-monsoon vegetation makes the landscape beautiful. This is a more comfortable time for casual visitors and families compared to the intense summer heat.

Monsoon (July to September)

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is closed to tourists during the monsoon season, typically from late June to the end of September. No safari entry is permitted during this period.
