When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. Gir National Park Travel FAQs

November to March provides the optimal conditions for lion safaris. December and January offer comfortable temperatures between 10-25°C with clear skies. February and March see increased wildlife activity around water sources as temperatures begin rising. The park remains closed from June 16 to October 15 due to monsoon rains and breeding season. April and May experience extreme heat reaching 42°C, making safari drives uncomfortable. Most tour packages schedule Gir visits during the December to February window.
The 2020 census recorded 674 Asiatic lions across the Gir landscape. This represents growth from 411 lions in 2010. The population includes 288 adult females, 197 adult males, and 189 cubs. Some lions now roam beyond park boundaries into areas like Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Gir remains the only place on earth where Asiatic lions survive in the wild, making it a critical conservation area.
Gir operates different safari zones with varying wildlife activity. The forest department assigns zones based on recent lion movement and vehicle capacity. Each zone covers different terrain from grasslands to dense forest areas. Safari permits specify the assigned zone, and guides share current wildlife reports. Tours typically include multiple safari drives across available zones to maximize sighting opportunities during your visit.
The park closes annually from June 16 to October 15 during monsoon season. This closure allows for conservation work and ensures visitor safety during heavy rains. The Devaliya Safari Park, a separate fenced area within the sanctuary, stays open year-round for tourists. Most packages to Gujarat schedule Gir visits between November and March when the main park operates normally.
March represents the shoulder season with warming temperatures but good wildlife visibility. April and May become extremely hot making safaris uncomfortable despite better animal sightings around water sources. November marks the transition from monsoon closure to peak season with moderate temperatures. Wildlife behavior varies significantly between these months affecting safari success rates.

Safari permits for Satpura Tiger Reserve can be booked online through the official forest department portal up to 120 days in advance. Morning and afternoon slots are available with separate entry gates. Tours typically include advance permit booking, forest guide assignment, and vehicle arrangements. Peak season bookings from December to April fill quickly.

Two to three days allow for multiple safari drives and adequate time to spot lions. Most packages include Gir as part of longer Gujarat tours covering Somnath, Dwarka, or Rajasthan destinations. A typical stay involves two nights with three safari drives scheduled across morning and afternoon slots. Single-day visits are possible but reduce wildlife sighting chances significantly.
Gir supports over 300 bird species including endangered Egyptian vultures and crested serpent eagles. Leopards inhabit the forest alongside spotted deer, sambar, and nilgai. Wild boar, langur monkeys, and Indian porcupines are commonly spotted. The park hosts four-horned antelopes and rusty-spotted cats. Marsh crocodiles inhabit the Kamleshwar Dam area within the sanctuary boundaries.
Rajkot Airport lies 160 kilometers from Gir with regular flights from Delhi and Mumbai. The nearest railway station is Junagadh, 65 kilometers away on the Western Railway network. Road connectivity includes the Sasan Gir bus stand with state transport services from Ahmedabad and Rajkot. Most tour packages include private transport from entry points to forest gate areas and accommodation.
Sasan Gir village offers government forest lodges and private resorts within walking distance of safari gates. Accommodation ranges from basic forest rest houses to luxury wildlife resorts with modern amenities. Many properties provide early morning safari coordination and packed meals for game drives. Tour packages typically include stays at properties that arrange forest permits and vehicle bookings directly.
