Leh can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is from May to September when the weather is suitable and most roads and tourist attractions are accessible.
Summer (May to September)This is the best time to visit Leh. The weather remains pleasant during the day, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 25°C. Roads from Manali and Srinagar are open, and flights operate regularly. It is perfect for exploring Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, monasteries, and high mountain passes. This period is ideal for sightseeing, road trips, and adventure activities.
Winter (October to February)Winters in Leh are extremely cold, with temperatures dropping below -15°C. Heavy snowfall and frozen conditions limit accessibility, and most tourist facilities remain closed. However, this season is suitable for experienced travelers looking for snow landscapes and unique experiences like the Chadar Trek.
Early Season (March to April)This is a transitional period when the weather starts improving, but road access is still limited. Flights are operational, and the region remains less crowded. It is suitable for travelers who prefer quieter experiences, though sightseeing options may be restricted compared to peak months.
Ladakh is accessible for most travelers between May and October when the mountain passes are open and road conditions are manageable. June to September is the peak summer window with the warmest temperatures and full access to Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri. October brings the first snowfall on the higher passes. January to March is the specialist window for snow leopard tracking in Hemis National Park, when the region is cold and remote but rewarding for wildlife travelers.
Yes. Leh sits at 3,524 metres and travelers arriving by flight experience an immediate altitude change. A full rest day in Leh on arrival is built into every Alkof Holidays Ladakh itinerary before any sightseeing or travel to higher areas begins. Light activity, no alcohol, and adequate hydration during the first 24 significantly reduce the risk. Travelers with pre-existing heart or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before booking.
Foreign nationals require an Permit to visit several areas including Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, Hanle, and Turtuk. At Alkof Holidays, we provide Ladakh tours with all required permits including Ladakh Environment Fee, Wild life charges, Red Cross Fee, and Inner line permit.
A minimum of 7 days is needed to cover Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake at a pace that includes an acclimatization day in Leh on arrival. To add Tso Moriri, Turtuk, or the Zanskar Valley, a 10 to 12 day itinerary is more appropriate.
