Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most unique wildlife destinations in the world because it is the only place on earth where you can see the Asiatic lion in the wild. Once ranging across a vast swathe of land from Greece and the Middle East to India, the Asiatic lion was reduced to a tiny population of just around 20 animals in Gir by the early 20th century due to hunting and habitat loss. Through strict protection and conservation efforts over more than a century, the population has made a spectacular recovery and today over 650 Asiatic lions live in and around the Gir forest, a conservation success story that is celebrated worldwide.
Located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat in the Saurashtra peninsula, Gir covers a total area of about 1,412 square kilometers, with the national park forming the strictly protected core zone. The landscape is a mix of dry deciduous teak forest, open grasslands, rocky outcrops, and seasonal rivers. The Hiran, Shingoda, Datardi, and other rivers flow through the forest and attract wildlife to their banks. Beyond lions, Gir is home to leopards, hyenas, jackals, jungle cats, sambar, chital, nilgai, four-horned antelope, and over 300 species of birds. The Crocodile Breeding Center near the Sinh Sadan forest lodge is an important conservation facility and is open to visitors. The sacred Somnath Temple and the historic Junagadh city with its magnificent fort and Nawabi monuments are located nearby, making Gir a natural addition to a broader Gujarat itinerary.

Winter and Spring (December to May)
December to May is the best time to visit Gir. The park is open during this entire period and wildlife viewing is excellent throughout. December to February offers the most comfortable weather with temperatures ranging from 12 to 28 degrees Celsius. Lions are active during the cooler parts of the day and sightings are frequent. March to May is the peak season for lion sightings as the heat drives animals to water sources and the vegetation thins out, making it easier to spot lions in open areas. April and May are the hottest months but also the most productive for wildlife encounters. The park opens its gates for the season usually in mid-December after the monsoon closure.
Monsoon (June to mid-December)
Gir National Park closes to tourists during the monsoon season, typically from around mid-June to mid-December. The park uses this period for conservation and natural recovery. The lions remain in the forest but safari entry is not permitted.
