We had a memorable time in Delhi and Agra, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the city and the countryside as we traveled between the two cities. The sites were amazing, as expected, and our guides were able and helpful in explaining what we were seeing and answering our many questions. They did a great job of ensuring we were able to get great photos as well along the way.

Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Food and Culinary Tours Travel FAQs

At Alkof Holidays, we design food tours that go beyond restaurants. You'll cook with local families in their homes, learning regional recipes passed down through generations. We arrange spice market walks where vendors explain how to select fresh ingredients. Street food tours include safe, vetted stalls where you'll try regional specialties like Mumbai's vada pav or Delhi's paranthas. Cooking classes happen in traditional kitchens using clay ovens and copper pots. Farm visits show you where spices like cardamom and black pepper grow. Temple food experiences let you share simple vegetarian meals with pilgrims. Each region offers different flavors - Kerala's coconut-based curries differ completely from Punjab's wheat-heavy dishes.
A focused food tour works well in 7-10 days for one region. This gives you time to explore local markets, take cooking classes, and eat at different types of places without rushing. Two weeks lets you cover two regions - perhaps Kerala's seafood and Tamil Nadu's vegetarian traditions, or Rajasthan's dal dishes and Punjab's dairy-rich foods. We often combine food experiences with cultural sights. A temple visit includes the community kitchen. A fort tour ends with a royal-style meal. Three weeks allows you to taste your way across north and south India, experiencing completely different cooking styles and ingredients.
October to March offers the best conditions for food tours. The weather stays comfortable for market walks and outdoor cooking classes. Many seasonal ingredients are available during winter months. Mango season runs April to June, perfect for trying dozens of varieties, but the heat can be intense. Monsoon season (June to September) brings fresh vegetables but makes market visits challenging due to rain. Winter festivals like Diwali in October-November mean special sweets and festive foods. Rice harvest season in south India (December-January) lets you see grain processing firsthand. We plan tours around local food festivals and seasonal ingredients specific to each region.
At Alkof Holidays, we take you to street food stalls we know personally. Our local guides have relationships with vendors who maintain high standards. We choose busy stalls with high turnover - food stays fresh when it sells quickly. We avoid places that pre-cook food hours in advance. Our guides know which stalls use filtered water and fresh oil. We start with milder foods and gradually introduce spicier options so your stomach adjusts. We carry basic medications and know the location of good hospitals in each city. Many travelers eat street food throughout their trip without problems when they follow our guidance.
You'll master techniques that transform simple ingredients into complex flavors. Tempering (tadka) involves heating whole spices in oil to release essential oils - the foundation of most Indian dishes. We teach you to grind fresh spice pastes using stone mortars, creating bases for curries. Clay pot cooking over wood fires gives food a smoky flavor impossible to achieve with gas stoves. You'll learn to judge doneness by smell and sound rather than timers. Fermentation techniques for dosa batter and idli take practice. Bread making involves hand-kneading techniques for different textures. Each region has specific methods - Kerala uses coconut grinding stones while Punjab focuses on tandoor techniques.
We recommend consulting your doctor about stomach-friendly medications before traveling. Probiotics taken two weeks before arrival help build good bacteria. Avoid drinking tap water - we provide filtered water throughout your tour. Hand sanitizer helps between food tastings. Comfortable walking shoes work better than sandals in busy markets where spills happen. Loose cotton clothing stays cooler in hot kitchens. We suggest starting with milder foods if you're not used to spices. Let us know about food allergies or dietary restrictions when booking - vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and Jain food options exist everywhere. Most cooking classes can adapt recipes to your needs.
India offers incredible options for vegetarian and vegan travelers. Many regions have centuries-old vegetarian traditions with complex, satisfying dishes. Gujarat serves purely vegetarian thalis with 20+ different items. South Indian temples have been serving vegan food for thousands of years. We arrange visits to Jain communities where even onions and garlic are avoided. Traditional cooking uses ghee (clarified butter), but coconut oil and sesame oil alternatives exist in every region. Mumbai has dedicated vegan restaurants. Kerala uses coconut milk instead of dairy in most curries. We connect you with vegetarian families who share their daily recipes and cooking methods.
Each region offers distinct flavors worth exploring. Kerala specializes in seafood curries with coconut and curry leaves. Tamil Nadu serves vegetarian temple food and Chettinad spice blends. Karnataka offers filter coffee culture and Mysore palace cuisine. Rajasthan creates rich gravies that preserve well in desert conditions. Punjab gives you tandoor breads and dairy-heavy dishes. Bengal focuses on fish preparations and milk-based sweets. Gujarat serves complete vegetarian thali meals. Mumbai blends street food from across India. We often recommend starting with one region to understand its food culture deeply, then expanding to others on future trips.
Pack light, breathable cotton clothes that you don't mind getting stained during cooking classes. Closed shoes work better than sandals in busy kitchens and spice markets. Bring a small notebook to write down recipes and techniques you learn. A good camera captures colorful dishes and market scenes. Hand sanitizer and wet wipes help between food tastings. Any personal medications for stomach issues should come from home. A reusable water bottle saves money and plastic. We provide aprons for cooking classes. Don't pack too many clothes - you'll want space for spices, cookbooks, and kitchen tools you'll find in local markets.
Our cooking classes focus on techniques you can replicate in any kitchen. We teach you to identify and substitute spices available in international markets. You'll learn to adjust recipes based on your local ingredients - using Greek yogurt instead of Indian curd, for example. We provide written recipes with measurements converted for Western kitchens. Many spices and specialty items can now be ordered online. Clay pots and spice grinders are available in most cities. We connect you with Indian grocery stores near your home. Former guests often send us photos of dishes they've successfully recreated months later. The key is understanding basic techniques rather than memorizing complex recipes.
