+91-9873003099 Alternate line: +91-9717930209Wayanad is a hilly district in the northeastern corner of Kerala, nestled in the Western Ghats at altitudes ranging from 700 to 2,100 meters above sea level. It is one of the most naturally beautiful and ecologically significant districts in South India, covered with dense forests, tea and coffee and spice plantations, mist-covered hills, ancient caves, waterfalls, and a significant tribal population that has lived in these forests for thousands of years. Wayanad shares its borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and is part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, making it an important wildlife corridor connecting several major protected areas.
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to wild elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar, Nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaques, and an extraordinary diversity of birds. The sanctuary is connected to Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka, allowing wildlife to move freely across a large forested landscape. The Edakkal Caves, reached by a short but steep trek from Ambalavayal, are prehistoric cave formations containing some of the earliest known rock carvings and pictographs in India, believed to be over 6,000 years old. The Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad at 2,100 meters, is a popular trekking destination whose summit offers panoramic views over the surrounding hills and valleys and is known for the heart-shaped lake near its top. The Banasura Sagar Dam, built on the Karamanathodu River, is the largest earth dam in India and the surrounding reservoir and hills make for a very scenic and peaceful area to explore.
Wayanad is also increasingly known for its plantation homestays and eco-resorts that offer guests an immersive experience in the middle of coffee, tea, and pepper estates. This Wayanad travel guide covers the best time to visit, top destinations and experiences, wildlife safaris, and travel tips for planning a wonderful trip to this green and beautiful district.
Winter (October to February)
October to February is the best time to visit Wayanad. The weather is cool and dry after the monsoon, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius. The forests and plantations are lush and beautiful, the wildlife sanctuary is at its best for animal sightings, and the trekking routes to Chembra Peak and other hills are accessible and safe. The post-monsoon landscape of Wayanad in October and November is particularly stunning, with the entire district dressed in deep green and the air cool and fragrant from the plantations.
Summer (March to May)
March and April are pleasant in Wayanad and this is a good time for wildlife spotting as the forest thins slightly and animals move towards water sources. Plantation activities are at their peak during the coffee and tea harvest season. Temperatures are warm but manageable and the region is less crowded than during the peak winter season.
Monsoon (June to September)
Wayanad receives very heavy monsoon rainfall. The waterfalls are magnificent and the entire landscape is dramatically green. However, forest roads can become difficult and some trekking routes are closed due to safety concerns and leech activity. The wildlife sanctuary has restricted access during peak monsoon months. Travelers who enjoy the rain and plantation atmospheres can have a very immersive experience in Wayanad during this season.
