Arikamedu

Arikamedu

The ancient Roman trade center Ariankuppam is situated on the banks of the river. The remains of the port which was a major maritime center between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD have been discovered during excavations. Arikamedu has special significance in South Indian archeology and is known for its stone bead production. The port city was inhabited by Romans and Cholas and evidence of their stay has been discovered by archaeologists. It is believed to be the only city with an archaeological record of Roman presence in India.

It is located on the East Coast Road and was established in 1968 by Mira Alfasa and designed by French architect Roger Anger. The monument consists of four white pillars with a life-size statue of a soldier leaning on a rifle. There is an inscription on the monument which says, 'Aux Combatants des Indes François Morts Poir la Petrie, 1914-1918' which means French fighter from India who died for his country in 1914-1918.

To reach here, you have to take a ferry across the backwaters, which takes around 20-30 minutes. There are a few huts along the main entrance to the beach, and you can get fresh coconut water and some simple snacks, Paradise Beach is a great place to arrive early in the morning and watch the sunrise on the east coast. Various types of water sports facilities are also available here.

The Hotel de Ville and the Town Hall also adorn the place.

The foundation of this ashram was laid on 24 November 1926, when he was surrounded by his disciples after retiring from politics and settling in Pondicherry. This ashram was established with the aim of helping people to attain salvation and inner peace. Thousands of tourists from all over the country visit the ashram to experience and gain spiritual knowledge. The ashram is one of the richest ashrams in the world. Also, the ashram has no branches and exists only in Pondicherry.
