Located in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal at an altitude of about 2,050 meters, it sits in the Lesser Himalayan range with commanding views of the greater Himalayan peaks including the magnificent Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. The town is terraced steeply across a hillside of extraordinary beauty, with colonial-era buildings, Buddhist monasteries, tea estates, and narrow lanes that wind between them in a way that makes every walk in Darjeeling an adventure.
Darjeeling is the home of the world's most celebrated tea. The Darjeeling tea, grown at high altitude in the cool misty conditions of the Himalayan foothills, has a delicate and floral character that is completely distinct from teas grown anywhere else in the world. The tea estates around Darjeeling, including Happy Valley, Makaibari, Glenburn, and Castleton, welcome visitors and offer the chance to walk through the gardens, watch the plucking, and taste freshly brewed tea at the source. Watching the sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, a viewpoint about 13 kilometers from Darjeeling town, is one of the most iconic experiences in all of India and is worth waking up at 4 in the morning to witness.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the Toy Train, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site narrow-gauge railway built between 1879 and 1881 that still runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Riding the Toy Train through the mountain forests and hillside tea gardens is a deeply nostalgic and enjoyable experience. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling is one of the finest high-altitude zoos in India and is home to the endangered red panda, snow leopard, and Himalayan wolf. This Darjeeling travel guide covers the best time to visit, top experiences, and all the practical information you need for a wonderful stay in this legendary hill town.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather is mild and pleasant, rhododendrons are in bloom across the hillsides, and the views of Kanchenjunga are often clear and stunning before the monsoon clouds arrive. This is also the first-flush tea season, the most prized harvest of the year, which takes place in March and April. Witnessing the tea plucking and tasting the fresh first-flush Darjeeling tea at a plantation during spring is an unforgettable experience for any tea lover.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is another excellent time to visit Darjeeling. The monsoon has cleared and the skies are typically clear and bright, offering the best visibility for the famous Kanchenjunga sunrise views from Tiger Hill. The second-flush and autumn tea harvests are also underway during this period. October and November are among the most beautiful months in Darjeeling with crisp air and vibrant forest colors.
Winter (December to February)
Winters are cold in Darjeeling, with temperatures dropping to around 2 degrees Celsius and occasional frost or snowfall. The views on clear winter mornings can be extraordinary. The town is quieter and more peaceful during winter, which suits travelers looking for a contemplative and slow-paced visit.
Monsoon (June to August)
Darjeeling receives heavy monsoon rainfall and the hillsides are often shrouded in cloud and mist for days at a time. Mountain views including Kanchenjunga are largely obscured during the monsoon. Travel can be affected by occasional landslides on the mountain roads. This is not the recommended time for a first visit to Darjeeling.
