The best time to visit Northeast India is from October to April, when the weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for exploring the region’s landscapes and cultural heritage. Avoid the monsoon season (June to September), as heavy rainfall can disrupt travel plans. For a more enjoyable experience, plan your trip in the winter and early spring.

Sikkim is famous for its snow-capped mountains, monasteries, scenic valleys, lakes, and rich Buddhist culture, along with stunning views of the Himalayas.

Yes, both Indian and foreign tourists require permits to visit Sikkim. Indian travelers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), while foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Please refer to the Know Before You Go section for complete details about permits required to visit Sikkim.

Darjeeling is world-renowned for its tea plantations, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak.

When preparing for a Darjeeling and Sikkim tour, it’s important to pack keeping in mind the mountain weather, which can change quickly. Carry warm clothing such as sweaters, jackets, mufflers, gloves, and woolen socks—even in summer, evenings can get chilly. Comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes are a must, as both destinations involve plenty of walking, hill climbs, and uneven terrain. Don’t forget essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer to protect against the strong mountain sun and dry air. If traveling in the rainy season (July–September), pack a sturdy umbrella or raincoat along with quick-dry clothes. For higher-altitude visits in Sikkim (like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, or Yumthang Valley), carry heavier woolens, thermal wear, and a cap to handle freezing conditions. Lastly, keep handy items like personal medicines, reusable water bottles, power banks, and government-issued ID proofs, as some areas in Sikkim require permits.

  • All Foreign Tourists (except those of Bhutanese origin) must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Protected or Restricted Areas in Sikkim. The permit is issued free of cost and can be obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs - Government of India (New Delhi), All Indian Missions Abroad, and Immigration Offices at the airports in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and New Delhi.
  • List of Restricted Areas for Foreign Tourists (All Foreign Tourists need to obtain RAP to visit following destinations in Sikkim):
    • East: Gangtok, Rumtek, Pakyong, Barapathing, Rongli, Rhenock, Aritar, and Rorathang.

    3. Individuals born in or nationals, OCIs, or citizens of Myanmar or Nigeria require prior clearance from either the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Home Department of Sikkim before entering the state.
  • Permit and Document Requirements: Need a clear Passport Copy or Identity Proof to get the required permits for Tsomgo Lake, New Baba Mandir, Nathula Pass, Lachen, and Lachung. Foreign tourists are not permitted to visit Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, and Zuluk in Sikkim.
  • Nathula Pass permits require an additional fee, issued on a rotation basis with confirmation only 24 hours before travel. Visits are allowed from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, requiring early departure from Gangtok. Efforts will be made to secure permits, but refunds are only given if unsuccessful due to weather or other factors—not if the permit is issued but the visit cannot be made. Small groups may be combined, requiring vehicle changes without refunds.
  • Tourism infrastructure in Sikkim and Darjeeling is limited, with many hotels lacking lifts and facing water and power restrictions. Guests with health concerns should request lower-floor rooms at booking. Due to high altitude, Gurudongmar Lake is not recommended for seniors and children under 10.
  • For easy communication on the go, consider downloading WhatsApp, as it is widely used in India.
  • Transportation is provided according to the itinerary only and is not available on a disposal or point-to-point basis.
  • Tipping in India, is optional but appreciated. A small gratuity is expected in some cases; tip generously for exceptional service. The amount can range from $2, $5, $10 per day, or more, depending on satisfaction and the quality of service received.

  • India VISA: Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan do not need a visa to enter India. However, all other foreign nationals must obtain a visa to enter India. For more information, please check https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas Read more
