Located in the Bundi district, it sits in a narrow valley surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and was once the capital of the proud Bundi State, ruled by the Hada Chauhan clan of Rajputs. While Rajasthan's more famous cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur are well established on the tourist circuit, Bundi remains refreshingly uncrowded and maintains a genuinely old-world character that is increasingly rare in modern India. The town's blue-painted houses, narrow winding lanes, ancient step wells, and the magnificent palace and fort rising above it all make Bundi one of the most visually striking towns in Rajasthan.
The Taragarh Fort, perched dramatically on the hill above the town, is one of the finest and most evocative forts in Rajasthan. It dates back to 1354 and commands sweeping views over the town and the surrounding hills and valleys. The Bundi Palace (Garh Palace) below the fort is famous for its extraordinary collection of Bundi murals, a distinctive style of miniature painting that depicts scenes of court life, mythology, and nature in vivid colors and exquisite detail. These paintings, covering the walls and ceilings of the palace's various halls and chambers, are considered among the finest examples of Rajput mural art in India. Bundi is also celebrated for its remarkable step wells (baoris), of which the Raniji ki Baori is the most magnificent, an ornately carved and architecturally sophisticated step well that descends deep into the earth through beautifully decorated tiers.
The writer Rudyard Kipling visited Bundi and was reportedly so captivated by it that he wrote about the town in his work. This Bundi travel guide covers the best time to visit, top attractions, local culture, and travel tips for experiencing one of Rajasthan's most charming and underrated towns.
Winter (October to March)
Winter is the best time to visit Bundi. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from around 10 to 25 degrees Celsius, making it very comfortable to explore the fort, palace, step wells, and the winding lanes of the old town. The blue-painted houses look especially beautiful in the clear winter light. The Bundi Utsav (Bundi Festival), a colorful cultural celebration with folk music, dance, and traditional crafts, is held in November and is a great reason to visit during the early winter months. The surrounding countryside is green and pleasant in the months just after the monsoon.
Summer (April to June)
Summers in Bundi can be very hot, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius or above. Travel during this period is not recommended for most visitors, as exploring the outdoor heritage sites and climbing to the fort becomes very uncomfortable in the heat.
Monsoon (July to September)
The monsoon brings moderate rainfall to Bundi and the surrounding countryside turns beautifully green. The step wells fill with water and look their most atmospheric during the rains. The town has a quiet, moody charm during the monsoon and is very uncrowded. Roads are generally accessible but some rural areas around the town can become muddy and difficult after heavy rain.
