An archaeological treasure, Bhimbetka has about 243 rock shelters and has earned the honor of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The images found in the rock shelters here are similar to those discovered in Australia's Kakadu National Park. Outside the massive sandstone, atop a comparatively dense forest, there are five groups of natural rock shelters, displaying paintings that date from the Mesolithic to the Historic period. The cultural traditions of the residents of the twenty-one villages adjacent to the site bear a strong resemblance to those represented in the rock painting.

Set on a massive platform of 21 feet, the architectural harmony of the lingam and the stage creates a striking synthesis of solidity and lightness.

The palace must have been built by a powerful Gond Sardar Nizam Shah. The building is one of the gems of Indian palace architecture, close in style to the Kharbuja Mahal in Dhar Fort.

Apart from this, the sanctuary also houses animals like panther, hyena, jackal, Indian fox, wild dog, wild cat, small Indian civet, blue bull, chinkara, black buck, chausingha, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar is home. Reptiles like Indian rock python and many others can also be seen here, sloth bear, porcupine, rhesus monkey, Hanuman langur, Indian rabbit, common mongoose, etc.
