The Ashoka Pillar with the Elephant Head in Sankisa is a historic Mauryan pillar topped with an elephant capital, marking the spot where the Buddha is said to have descended from heaven. The elephant symbolizes the white elephant that appeared in Queen Maya’s dream, foretelling the Buddha’s birth. While only the elephant capital remains today, the full pillar no longer stands. Emperor Ashoka erected this pillar in the 3rd century BCE during his pilgrimage to this sacred Buddhist site.
