We had a memorable time in Delhi and Agra, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the city and the countryside as we traveled between the two cities. The sites were amazing, as expected, and our guides were able and helpful in explaining what we were seeing and answering our many questions. They did a great job of ensuring we were able to get great photos as well along the way.

Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Fairs and Festivals Travel FAQs

Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Holi brings color throwing and spring celebrations. Durga Puja honors the goddess Durga, especially grand in West Bengal. Dussehra marks the triumph of good over evil with elaborate processions. Ganesh Chaturthi features massive elephant-headed deity processions in Maharashtra. Navaratri brings nine nights of dance in Gujarat. Karva Chauth sees married women fasting for their husbands' wellbeing. Eid celebrations vary by region with feasts and prayers. Christmas is celebrated nationwide with midnight masses and festivities. We help you time your visit to experience these celebrations firsthand.
Festival season runs October through March when weather stays pleasant. Diwali falls in October or November depending on lunar calendar. Holi happens in March during spring season. Durga Puja occurs in September or October. Winter months offer comfortable temperatures for outdoor celebrations and processions. Monsoon festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi happen in August-September but expect heavy rains. Summer festivals in April-June can be extremely hot, reaching 45°C in many regions. We recommend planning around specific festivals you want to experience. Our team tracks festival dates years in advance since they shift annually based on lunar calendar.
A focused single festival experience needs 4-5 days minimum. This covers pre-festival preparations, main celebration days, and recovery time. Multi-festival tours across regions require 10-15 days. Diwali celebrations span 5 days across different regions. Durga Puja in Kolkata needs 4-5 days to see all pandals and immersion ceremonies. Holi festivities last 2-3 days including Holika Dahan. We design tours based on festival intensity and your interests. Some festivals like Kumbh Mela need longer stays due to scale and spiritual significance. Our itineraries include buffer days for rest between intense celebration periods.
Expect massive crowds, especially during major celebrations like Diwali and Holi. Noise levels increase significantly with music, firecrackers, and processions. Streets fill with decorations, lights, and temporary stalls. Local transport gets crowded and delayed during festival days. Hotels and restaurants often get fully booked months in advance. Dress codes become more colorful and traditional during festivities. Food plays central role with special sweets and dishes prepared for each festival. Religious ceremonies happen at specific times, often early morning or evening. Shopping areas stay open later with festival sales. We arrange comfortable accommodations away from main chaos while keeping you close to celebrations.
Most Indian festivals welcome foreign participation with enthusiasm. Locals often invite visitors to join family celebrations and community events. Holi encourages everyone to throw colors regardless of background. Diwali celebrations include lighting lamps and sharing sweets with neighbors. Temple festivals allow respectful participation following dress codes and customs. Photography is generally welcomed but ask permission for religious ceremonies. Learning basic greetings in local language enhances your experience. We provide cultural orientation before festivals to ensure respectful participation. Our local guides explain significance and appropriate behavior for each celebration. Some festivals have specific customs for visitors that we brief you about in advance.
Standard tourist visas cover festival participation across India. No special permits needed for major public festivals like Diwali, Holi, or Durga Puja. Some restricted areas near borders may require additional permissions during large gatherings. Kumbh Mela and similar mega events sometimes need advance registration for accommodation zones. We handle all necessary documentation and permissions for your festival tour. Entry to private celebration venues gets arranged through our local contacts. Some temples during festivals may have specific entry requirements we coordinate in advance. State-specific guidelines during festivals are managed by our regional teams who stay updated on current requirements.
Festival periods are generally safe with increased police presence and community vigilance. Crowds can be overwhelming but are usually friendly and celebratory. Pickpocketing increases in dense crowds so secure your valuables carefully. Traffic congestion reaches peak levels during major festivals. Fire safety becomes important during Diwali due to fireworks and diyas. Food hygiene requires extra attention as many temporary stalls operate. We provide 24/7 support during festival tours for any emergencies. Our guides stay with groups in crowded areas and know alternative routes. Pre-planned evacuation routes from major celebration sites ensure your safety. Local emergency contacts and nearest hospitals are always shared with our guests.
Each festival brings specific traditional foods and sweets. Diwali features mithai like gulab jamun, barfi, and laddu. Holi includes gujiya, malpua, and thandai drinks. Durga Puja offers Bengali specialties like fish curry and rossogolla. Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates with modak and coconut sweets. Street food increases dramatically during festivals with regional specialties. Vegetarian options dominate most Hindu festivals. We arrange food tours to experience authentic festival cuisines safely. Our restaurant recommendations focus on hygiene standards during busy festival periods. Special dietary requirements are communicated to hosts and venues in advance. Festival banquets in homes offer the most authentic culinary experiences.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for navigating crowds and uneven surfaces. Cotton clothing works best for most festivals due to heat and crowds. White clothes get permanently stained during Holi so bring old items. Traditional Indian outfits like kurtas are appreciated but not mandatory. Wet wipes and hand sanitizer become crucial during outdoor celebrations. Power banks keep devices charged during long celebration days. Waterproof phone covers protect against Holi colors and monsoon festivals. Earplugs help during noisy firework celebrations. Small backpack distributes weight better than heavy bags in crowds. We provide packing lists specific to festivals and seasons you'll experience during your tour.
Remove shoes before entering temples and homes during celebrations. Cover shoulders and legs appropriately, especially during religious ceremonies. Ask permission before photographing people during prayers or rituals. Accept offered food and drinks graciously as refusal can seem rude. Join in dancing and singing when invited by locals. Learn basic festival greetings like 'Happy Diwali' or 'Holi Hai'. Avoid pointing feet toward deities or elder people during ceremonies. Gift exchange is common during some festivals so carry small presents. Our cultural briefings before each festival explain specific dos and don'ts. Local guides demonstrate appropriate behavior and help you participate respectfully in all celebrations.
