Situated between Mumbai and Pune on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, it is one of the most easily accessible hill destinations in western India and has been a popular weekend getaway for the residents of both cities for well over a century. The combination of its cool climate, green valleys, scenic viewpoints, waterfalls during the monsoon, and relatively easy road and rail access has kept Lonavala on the short list of favorite escapes for millions of people in Maharashtra.
Lonavala is closely associated with its twin hill station Khandala, which is just a few kilometers away, and the two are often spoken of and visited together. The most iconic viewpoints in the area include Tiger Point, Lion's Point, Bhushi Dam, and the stunning Duke's Nose, a rocky promontory that juts out over the valley and offers panoramic views of the Sahyadri landscape. The Rajmachi Fort and Lohagad Fort are two magnificent Maratha forts accessible by trekking from Lonavala and are particularly popular during the monsoon when the surrounding hills are green and the forts are wreathed in cloud. The Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves, located about 15 to 20 kilometers from Lonavala, are ancient Buddhist rock-cut cave temples dating back over 2,000 years and are among the finest examples of early Buddhist architecture in India. Lonavala is also famous for its chikki, a traditional sweet made from groundnuts and jaggery that is sold at every shop in town and is something of an institution among visitors.
This Lonavala travel guide covers the best time to visit, top attractions, trekking options, and travel tips for planning an enjoyable trip to this popular Maharashtra hill station.
Monsoon (June to September)
The monsoon is the most atmospheric and visually spectacular time to visit Lonavala. The entire Sahyadri landscape comes alive with waterfalls, rushing streams, and deep green vegetation. The Bhushi Dam overflows and people wade through the gushing water. The valleys below the viewpoints are filled with cloud and mist. This is peak season for Lonavala and the town gets very busy on weekends with visitors from Mumbai and Pune. The fort treks at Rajmachi and Lohagad are extremely popular during this period, with the forts appearing dramatically out of the mist.
Winter (October to February)
Winter is a very pleasant time to visit Lonavala. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. The post-monsoon landscape is still green and fresh in October and November. This is an ideal time for trekking to the Maratha forts and visiting the Karla and Bhaja Caves in comfortable weather. The waterfalls have reduced significantly but the scenic viewpoints are at their clearest during winter.
Summer (March to May)
Summers in Lonavala are warm but considerably cooler than in Mumbai and Pune, which makes it a popular escape during this season as well. The landscape is dry and brown during summer and the waterfalls are absent, but the viewpoints and cave temples remain accessible and enjoyable in the early morning hours.
