Badal Mahal

This structure is the most prominent among all the monuments of Chanderi and is situated at the southern end of the inner city. Located within one of the seven interlocking walls of the city that divided the city into specific areas, this gate was built in the 15th century during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah Khilji I. This entrance is said to have stood at the entrance of a palace, Badal Mahal, but now this palace is no longer in existence. This arched gate itself served as an entrance gate with two tall flute-like minarets on either side. There is some space above the door and there is another arch at the top with lattice decorations of four different patterns. On either side of the door are two flowered roundels with smaller versions adorning the minarets. Also in the decoration are miniature arched facades and other geometric motifs.

Chanderi Fort is situated at an altitude of 71 meters from the city on a hillock in the small historical town of Chanderi in Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh. The fort is fortified with a 5 km long wall. Chanderi Fort is the most distinctive monument of this ancient city. Chanderi Fort dates back to the Mughal period. The Muslim rulers took a lot of initiative to build the fortification walls of the fort. The palaces within the fort were built by the Bundela chiefs.

Preserving the vast heritage and culture of Madhya Pradesh, the ASI museum has a collection of ancient sculptures, stone carvings, remains of the Jain temples found in Chanderi, Stone-Age artefacts, coins and ornaments. The huge collection of books (around 3000 in number) are the crown jewels of the museum. The Lord Vishnu Gallery that shows the different avatars of Vishnu depicted throughout Hindu history, is a rare experience in itself. Mythology takes shape at the museum and makesit a unique spot for tourists.

This heraldic structure, cut entirely out of living rock, is situated on the southern edge of Chanderi, forming a link between Bundelkhand on the north and Malwa on the south. Standing tall at 230 ft above ground level, the gate itself is 80 ft high and 39 ft wide. An inscription both in Devnagari and Nask scripts, on the eastern wall of the gate states that its construction was commissioned in AD 1495 by Jiman Khan, the son of the then Governor of Chanderi, Sher Khan.

Koshak Mahal or 'Koshak Mahal' is located in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. This palace was built in 1445 AD by Mahmud Khilji of Malwa. Every section of the palace has jharokhas, rows of windows and magnificent carvings on the ceiling. It was built to commemorate the victory of Mahmud Khilji in the battle of Kalpi. In this war he defeated Sultan Mahmud Shakri. The Kaushak Mahal is a square structure with impressive arched doors. The palace is made up of four identical houses which are situated at equal distance from each other. Some walkways and covered corridors connect them. Now the superstructure of the palace does not exist, but its beauty can be assessed from its remaining remains. Kaushak Mahal is constructed from local white sandstone. The architecture and design of the four houses of the palace are similar.

Shahzadi Ka Roza is a tomb located in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. Situated near Parmeshwar Tal, it is one of the prominent Chanderi tourist places. Shahzadi Ka Rauza was built in the 15th century by the Governor of Chanderi, Hakim in memory of his daughter Mehrunnisa. It stands as a metaphor for unfulfilled love. Built entirely of grey-colored sandstone, this elegant structure is built on a 12 feet high platform.

Chanderi Fort, a vast Mughal fort, dominates the skyline of the lovely old town of Chanderi. The main gate of the fort is known as the "Khooni Darwaza". The first and the main gate is known as 'Khooni Darwaza'. It is so named because the criminals were thrown from the battlements above and their bodies crashed below. The uppermost gate 'Hawa Pur' is the third and highest gate of the Chanderi Fort. The southwest- side of the fort has a gate called the 'Kati-Ghati'.

Lakshman Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Lakshman located at Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. The Temple might have been built by the Gurjara Pratihara Dynasty, Later, the temple was completely rebuilt by Bundela King Anirudh Singh in 18th century CE. The temple is situated on the banks of the Parmeshwar Tank. The temple enshrines an idol of Lakshman and Sheshnag inside its sanctum.
