Alappuzha Travel Guide

Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a city in Kerala that has been famous for its backwaters, houseboats, and canals for well over a century. It was described by the writer Lord Curzon as the Venice of the East, and while the comparison is inevitably imperfect, it captures something true about this city built on a network of canals, lakes, and rivers that crisscross the low-lying coastal land between the sea and the inland lagoons. Alappuzha is arguably the most famous backwater destination in Kerala and is the place that most people think of when they picture a traditional Kerala houseboat drifting slowly through palm-fringed waterways under a warm evening sky.

The backwaters around Alappuzha are formed by a network of canals, rivers, lakes, and the vast Vembanad Lake, which is the longest lake in India. Houseboat stays on the backwaters, ranging from basic overnight cruises to luxury floating villas, are the central experience of any visit to Alappuzha and offer a completely unique perspective on Kerala life. As the houseboat moves through the canals, you pass through villages where children wave from the banks, fishermen cast their nets into the water, and traditional Chinese fishing nets are silhouetted against the evening sky. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held on the second Saturday of August every year on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, is one of the most spectacular sporting and cultural events in India, attracting massive crowds to watch enormous snake boats race across the water to the sound of drummers and chanting oarsmen.

Beyond the backwaters, Alappuzha has a pleasant beach, the ancient Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple known for its famous sweet rice pudding offering called palpayasam, and easy access to the broader network of canals that connect it to Kumarakom, Kottayam, and Kollam. This Alappuzha travel guide covers the best time to visit, houseboat booking tips, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, and everything you need to plan a memorable backwater experience.

Best time to Visit Alappuzha

Winter (November to February)

November to February is the best time to visit Alappuzha. The weather is dry, cool, and comfortable, the backwaters are at their most beautiful under clear blue skies, and houseboat cruises are most enjoyable during this period. The canal and lake water is calm and the surrounding paddy fields and coconut palms create a serene and beautiful landscape. This is peak tourist season and houseboats get booked up quickly, so advance reservations are essential especially during the Christmas and New Year period.

Monsoon (June to August)

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race in August is one of the biggest events in Kerala and if witnessing this spectacular race is on your travel list, the monsoon is when you must come. The backwaters take on a dramatic, rain-washed quality during the monsoon. Many Ayurvedic resorts in and around Alappuzha offer special monsoon wellness packages. Houseboat operations continue during the monsoon but the experience is very different from the sunny winter version.

Summer (March to May)

March and April are warm but still very pleasant for backwater travel. Tourist crowds are thinner during this period, hotel rates are lower, and the pace of life is relaxed. This is a good time for those who want to experience the backwaters without the peak-season rush.
