Colombo Tour Packages

Discover Colombo through tour packages that combine Sri Lankan commercial capital with other key destinations across the island. Most itineraries pair Colombo with cultural sites like Kandy and Anuradhapura, or coastal areas such as Galle and the southern beaches. The city serves as both arrival point and cultural introduction, where colonial-era buildings from Dutch and British periods stand alongside modern shopping districts and bustling markets. Colombo Pettah district offers an authentic glimpse into local commerce, with narrow streets filled with spice vendors and textile shops that have operated for generations. Many tours include walks through different neighborhoods, from the upscale Cinnamon Gardens area to the historic Fort district near the harbor. Each package includes private transport, accommodation, and guided sightseeing tailored to your interests. Book or customize your preferred tour now.

We had a memorable time in Delhi and Agra, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the city and the countryside as we traveled between the two cities. The sites were amazing, as expected, and our guides were able and helpful in explaining what we were seeing and answering our many questions. They did a great job of ensuring we were able to get great photos as well along the way.

Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Colombo Travel FAQs

Most travellers spend 1-2 days in Colombo as part of longer Sri Lanka tours. Two days allows time to see the key areas including Fort district, Pettah markets, and Galle Face Green. Colombo often serves as the starting or ending point for Sri Lanka itineraries, with tours typically combining it with cultural sites like Kandy and Sigiriya, or coastal areas in the south.
Colombo can be visited year-round as it experiences a tropical climate. The drier months from December to March see less rainfall and are often preferred. May to September brings the southwest monsoon with afternoon showers. November to January tends to have the most comfortable temperatures. The city remains accessible throughout the year as most attractions are indoors or have covered areas.
Bandaranaike International Airport is about 35 kilometres north of Colombo city centre. Private transfers arranged through tour operators typically take 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Airport taxis and ride-hailing services are available. The journey time varies significantly based on Colombo's traffic conditions, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
Colombo tours typically cover Fort district with its colonial buildings and business area, Pettah's busy markets, and the Galle Face Green waterfront area. The National Museum and Independence Square are common stops. Many tours also include time in residential areas like Cinnamon Gardens. The city's layout allows visits to multiple districts in a day with private transport.
Colombo is generally safe for tourists using organized tours with local guides. Standard travel precautions apply, particularly in busy market areas like Pettah. Traffic can be heavy, so guided tours with private transport are recommended. Tour guides familiar with the city help navigate busy areas and provide local knowledge about current conditions and safe practices.
Most visitors to Sri Lanka, including Colombo, need either an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or visa depending on their nationality. The ETA can be obtained online before travel for many countries. Some nationalities receive visa-on-arrival options. Visa requirements change, so checking current regulations with Sri Lankan authorities before travel is essential for your specific passport.
Tours in Colombo typically use private vehicles with drivers who know the city roads and traffic patterns. This is the most practical option given Colombo's busy traffic and one-way street systems. Tuk-tuks are available for short distances. Walking is suitable in specific areas like Fort district, but the tropical heat and traffic make private transport preferable for sightseeing between different areas.
Colombo has a tropical climate with temperatures typically between 25-32°C year-round. Humidity is consistently high. Rain can occur any time but is heavier during monsoon periods. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially from May to September. Light, breathable clothing is recommended along with an umbrella. Air conditioning is standard in hotels and restaurants but not always in markets or outdoor areas.
Colombo offers Sri Lankan cuisine with rice and curry as the main staple, featuring coconut-based dishes with varying spice levels. Street food includes hoppers, kottu roti, and short eats. International restaurants serve Indian, Chinese, and Western food. Hotel restaurants cater to different spice tolerances. Tours can include lunch stops at local restaurants where guides help explain menu options and spice levels.
Most Sri Lanka tours combine Colombo with multiple destinations across the island. Common combinations include the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy), hill country areas like Nuwara Eliya, and southern coastal towns such as Galle. Tours typically use Colombo as either the starting or ending point, with internal flights or private road transport connecting to other regions within multi-day itineraries.
