Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent.

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Sri Lanka's charm lies in its diverse weather across different regions. The best time for your visit depends on your priorities! For sunshine and calm seas along the south and west coasts, aim for December to April. Craving beach vibes on the east coast? Head there between May and September. Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-November) offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds.
Sri Lanka generally welcomes foreign visitors with open arms. Violent crime against tourists is rare. However, as with any destination, it's wise to be mindful of your surroundings and take precautions like not carrying large sums of cash. To stay updated on any current safety concerns, check the travel advisories from your government's travel department.
Start with Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress rising 200 meters from the jungle. The climb takes about 2 hours, but the views and 1,500-year-old frescoes are worth every step. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Buddhism's most sacred site in Sri Lanka. The evening ceremony at 6:30 PM is particularly moving.
For wildlife, Yala National Park offers the best chance to spot leopards. Visit between February and July for the highest sightings. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa showcase Sri Lanka's royal heritage with massive dagobas and intricate stone carvings.
Head to Nuwara Eliya for cool mountain air and tea plantation tours. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is one of the world's most scenic, winding through emerald hills and cascading waterfalls. End your trip on the beaches of Mirissa for whale watching or Bentota for water sports. Each destination needs at least 2 days to explore properly.
Visa requirements for Sri Lanka depend on your nationality. The good news is that most visitors can now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online for a hassle-free entry process! Simply head over to the official Sri Lanka ETA website https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/ to check if you're eligible and apply online. If an ETA isn't an option for your nationality, you might need to apply for a visa at the nearest Sri Lankan embassy or consulate.

Two weeks gives you enough time to see Sri Lanka's highlights without rushing. Spend 3 days in the Cultural Triangle covering Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa. If you only have one week, focus on either the cultural sites plus Kandy, or combine the hill country with the south coast. Three weeks lets you explore the lesser-known east coast and northern regions like Jaffna. The compact size means you can cover a lot, but Sri Lanka rewards slower travel with deeper experiences.
Buses connect every corner of Sri Lanka and cost just $1-3 for long journeys. They can get crowded, especially during rush hours, but offer a authentic local experience. Private buses are faster and more comfortable than government buses.
Trains run on three main lines and provide scenic journeys, especially from Kandy to Ella. Book first-class seats in advance for comfort, though second-class is perfectly fine for shorter trips. The coastal line from Colombo to Galle offers ocean views.
Tuk-tuks work well for short distances in cities and cost $2-5 per ride. Always agree on the fare before starting. For longer distances and multiple stops, hire a private driver for $30-50 per day including fuel. This gives you flexibility to stop for photos and explore at your own pace. Rental cars are available but driving in Sri Lanka requires patience and local knowledge of traffic patterns.
