Alkof Holidays was a very good choice for arranging an individual journey throughout Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan in November 2025. The planning via e-mail was easy and turned out to be perfect. The whole tour was professionally organized and included all important points of interest as well as our individual preferences. The guides and drivers in Darjeeling/Sikkim as well as in Bhutan were very nice, helpful and competent. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar himself was at all times very polite, kind and accommodating. Thank you! I can highly recommend Alkof Holidays!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!

First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars!... First, I want to highlight that ALKOF HOLIDAYS truly deserves more than 5 stars! When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Once again, my sincere thanks and best regards to Alkof Holidays! Sylvia Veronika Lukas

Bodhgaya Travel FAQs

The best time to visit Bodhgaya is from October to March, when the weather is cool and comfortable, ideal for exploring its spiritual sites. October to November offers pleasant temperatures between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), while December to February brings cooler weather, ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F). Early March is also favorable before the heat of summer sets in. Avoid the hot summer months (April to June) and the monsoon season (July to September) due to extreme temperatures and heavy rains.

Bodhgaya holds immense significance in Buddhism as it is the place where Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Buddha, attained enlightenment under the sacred Bodhi Tree. This transformative moment marked the birth of Buddhism, making Bodhgaya a cornerstone of the religion. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a symbol of this spiritual journey and attracts devotees and travelers from all over the world. Beyond its historical and religious importance, Bodhgaya embodies a timeless message of peace, compassion, and introspection, serving as a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and spiritual seekers alike. Its serene atmosphere and rich heritage continue to inspire and connect people to the teachings of Buddha.

The Bodhi Tree holds profound significance in Buddhism as the site where Siddhartha Gautama meditated and achieved enlightenment, becoming the Buddha. Located in Bodhgaya, this sacred tree is considered a symbol of spiritual awakening and wisdom. The Bodhi Tree represents the core values of Buddhism, including mindfulness, compassion, and self-realization. Its legacy extends beyond religion, serving as a beacon for seekers of peace and truth across the world. Pilgrims and visitors often gather under its branches to meditate, reflect, and connect with the teachings of Buddha, making it a revered and timeless emblem of spiritual aspiration.

Yes, the Bodhi Tree in Bodhgaya is still alive and thriving. The current tree is a direct descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Despite facing destruction multiple times in history, it has been carefully preserved and remains a sacred symbol for Buddhists worldwide.

Yes, Bodhgaya hosts several festivals and events that celebrate its spiritual and cultural significance, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world. The most notable is the Buddha Jayanti, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of the Buddha. This event is marked with prayers, chanting, and rituals, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Another major celebration is the Kagyu Monlam Chenmo, or the Great Prayer Festival, where thousands of Buddhist monks and practitioners gather to pray for world peace and harmony. Additionally, Bodhgaya comes alive during the cold season with various teachings and ceremonies conducted by prominent Buddhist leaders, including the Dalai Lama. These events, steeped in tradition and devotion, make Bodhgaya a vibrant hub of spiritual activity and cultural exchange.

For an enriching journey through history, spirituality, and culture, consider exploring Rajgir, Nalanda, and the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya. Rajgir, a revered site in Buddhism, offers scenic landscapes and ancient monuments, including the Vulture's Peak and hot springs. Nalanda, home to the remains of the renowned Nalanda University, provides a glimpse into the golden age of Buddhist education and scholarship. Meanwhile, the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is a sacred Hindu site that boasts exquisite architecture and the symbolic footprint of Lord Vishnu, attracting pilgrims for its spiritual significance and rituals like Pind Daan. Together, these destinations offer a unique blend of historical depth and spiritual resonance, making them unmissable highlights near Bodhgaya.

The primary difference between Gaya and Bodhgaya lies in their purpose and significance:

  • Gaya: Gaya is a bustling city in Bihar, known for its cultural, historical, and religious importance for Hindus. The city is famous for the Vishnupad Temple, where Hindus perform rituals, especially the Pind Daan ceremony, to honor and provide salvation to their ancestors. It is a vibrant urban area with markets and local attractions.
  • Bodhgaya: Bodhgaya, located about 13 kilometers from Gaya, is a peaceful town of immense spiritual significance for Buddhists. It is revered as the site where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and monasteries from various Buddhist nations make it a major pilgrimage destination.

In summary, while Gaya is prominent in Hindu rituals, Bodhgaya is celebrated as a sacred site in Buddhism. Both are deeply rooted in spirituality but cater to different religious practices.

Two days are usually enough to explore Bodhgaya thoroughly. This allows time to visit the Mahabodhi Temple, monasteries, Bodhi Tree, and nearby attractions like Dungeshwari Hills. For a deeper spiritual experience, you can also participate in meditation sessions or explore cultural events, making your stay more fulfilling.
