The best time to visit Aurangabad (Officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) is from October to February when the weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for exploring the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Daulatabad Fort, and other historical sites.
Ellora Caves are ancient rock cut caves near Aurangabad and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved between the 6th and 10th centuries, they feature Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments together. The highlight is the Kailasa Temple, a massive monolithic structure carved from a single rock, known for its scale, intricate carvings, and remarkable engineering. Even today, creating a structure of this complexity and precision would be an extraordinary challenge.
The Ajanta and Ellora Caves were not built by a single ruler but were created over many centuries by different dynasties and skilled artisans.
Ajanta Caves were developed mainly between the 2nd century BCE and 6th century CE under the patronage of Satavahana and later Vakataka rulers, primarily by Buddhist monks and craftsmen.
Ellora Caves were carved between the 6th and 10th centuries under rulers like the Rashtrakuta dynasty, along with earlier Kalachuri and later Yadava influences, involving Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain communities.
