Itinerary
On your arrival at Leh Airport, an Alkof Holidays representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to acclimatize to the altitude and climate in Leh. If time permits, visit the Leh Palace, also known as Lachen Palkar Palace, a former royal residence that offers stunning views of the city. Explore the picturesque white-domed Shanti Stupa perched on a hilltop, and later, stroll through the local market where you can shop for authentic Tibetan handicrafts such as prayer wheels, stoles, and Pashmina shawls. Enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, head out to explore the beautiful Sham Valley. This place offers a touching tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pak wars, built by the Indian Army. Next, visit the Kali Mata Mandir, followed by the historic Spituk Gompa, a stunning 11th-century Buddhist monastery. Continue to Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, built in honor of Guru Nanak Dev's visit in 1517. Experience the fascinating Magnetic Hill, where the road seems to defy gravity, and enjoy the scenic drive to the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers. After an inspiring day, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, drive to Nubra Valley, also known as Ldumra or the Valley of Flowers. Located north of Ladakh between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges, this high-altitude valley sits at around 10,000 feet. En route, cross Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes at 18,300 feet, and enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. Upon arrival, check in at your camp for an overnight stay in Nubra Valley.
After breakfast, set out on a picturesque drive to the enchanting Turtuk border village, situated at the confluence of the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, overlooking the serene Shyok river. This historic village, home to the Balti tribe, is celebrated for its unique culture, traditions, and mouthwatering cuisine. Once under Pakistani control until India reclaimed it in 1971, Turtuk tells a poignant story of divided families, with many relatives residing across the border, visible from the village heights. A paradise for photographers, Turtuk offers stunning views, a glimpse into the vibrant local lifestyle, and delights such as its famed apricots and the captivating sword dance performed on special occasions. After an unforgettable day immersed in this culturally rich and scenic destination, return to Nubra for an overnight stay at the camp.
Start your day with breakfast and visit Diskit Monastery, known for its large Maitreya Buddha statue and views over the valley. Later, drive to Pangong Lake via the scenic Shyok route. Upon arrival, check in at your camp and enjoy the changing colors of the lake set against the surrounding mountains. Dinner and overnight stay near Pangong Lake.
After an early breakfast, check out from your camp or hotel and embark on a scenic drive to Hanle. Your journey takes you through Chushul Village and over the Tsaga La Pass, which stands at 15,200 feet. Enjoy the breathtaking drive through this remote and rugged terrain as you make your way to Hanle. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation in Hanle for an overnight stay.
Hanle: Nestled in a high-altitude desert landscape, Hanle is renowned for its Indian Astronomical Observatory. This remote location is strategically important due to its proximity to the Tibetan/Chinese border. The observatory hosts the Himalayan Chandra Telescope, a 2-meter gamma-ray telescope designed for cutting-edge astronomical research. The Major Atmospheric Cerenkov Experiment Telescope, currently under construction, will become the world’s largest telescope at the highest altitude and the second largest gamma-ray telescope globally. Hanle also holds historical significance; it is believed that King Singge Namgyal died here after returning from an expedition against the Mongols.
After breakfast, check out and set off on a drive to Tsomoriri Lake. Your route takes you over the Nurpa Pass, which stands at 16,100 feet, followed by crossing the Mahe Bridge. The journey brings you to Tsomoriri Lake, situated at 14,000 feet near the small village of Korzok. Upon arrival at Tsomoriri Lake, check in at your camp for the night. Spend your evening enjoying a leisurely walk along the lake’s banks, taking in the serene beauty and tranquility of this high-altitude setting. Overnight stay at your camp or hotel in Korzok.
Tsomoriri Lake: Recently opened to foreign visitors due to its proximity to the Chinese border, the Changthang region is known for its remote wilderness and stunning landscapes. Tsomoriri Lake, an expansive body of water measuring 8 kilometers in width and 28 kilometers in length, is a vital breeding ground for a variety of bird species. Spot birds such as the bar-headed goose, crested grebe, Brahmini duck (ruddy sheldrake), and the brown-headed gull as you explore the area.
After an early breakfast, check out and explore Korzok village, known for its high-altitude barley fields and monastery. Later, drive to Tso Kar Lake, passing through the Changthang region, home to the nomadic Changpa community. Enjoy time at the lake before continuing to Leh. Today, explore the famous Indus Valley circuit around Leh. Visit Shey Palace, once the summer residence of Ladakh’s royal family and home to a large Shakyamuni Buddha statue. Continue to Thiksey Monastery, known for its hilltop setting and impressive Maitreya Buddha statue. Visit Sindhu Ghat on the banks of the Indus River and continue to Hemis Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. Later, visit the famous Rancho School, featured in the movie 3 Idiots. Return to the hotel in Leh for an overnight stay.
