When my friend Elisabeth and I decided to take this trip, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar contacted us — and that turned out to be the best choice we could have made! He suggested different hotels, recommended excursions, and always ensured we had options that met our expectations and complete satisfaction. He customized the tour according to our wishes in the best possible way. He arranged highly competent, pleasant, friendly, and helpful guides and drivers with excellent cars. They always accepted all our ‘extra wishes,’ such as photo stops or changes in the planned schedule, and were always exactly on time. Mr. Gurvinder Singh gave us a wonderfully informative tour in Kolkata. During our days in Darjeeling, we had Mr. Amid Gurung, who was extremely caring, helpful, and always adjusted the excursions—especially those involving many steps or steep climbs—to my age (79). He supported me with great caution by holding my arm or hand whenever needed. Our driver, Mr. Binai, was the best driver you could imagine, especially considering the road conditions—landslides, rocks, roadwork, heavy traffic—but he handled everything perfectly and calmly! In Bhutan, our guide Mr. Sungay was such a pleasant companion and shared a lot about the country, its people, religion, and lifestyle. Our driver Ellis was also very kind, but Elisabeth somehow did not feel comfortable with his driving (although I did not agree!). So, we changed to Mr. Rimchen, another extremely kind, helpful, charming, pleasant, and excellent driver. We had a wonderful and very interesting trip with extraordinary views of mountains, monasteries, temples, tea estates, forests, rivers, flowers, and beautiful houses. We met unforgettable, kind people — and to top it all, we enjoyed blue skies and warm sunshine every single day! Mr. Sanjeev Kumar was always reachable whenever needed. Even when we returned to Delhi, he accompanied us to an extraordinary fabric factory that my friend wanted to visit. He arranged a car for the visit and organized a bigger vehicle for our return to the airport to accommodate all our luggage. Thanks to ALKOF HOLIDAYS, and especially to Mr. Sanjeev Kumar — who spent so much time and effort arranging our reservations, visas, and all the special extras — we look back on a wonderful trip we will never forget. We will continue to enjoy all the photos we took! We will certainly recommend ALKOF HOLIDAYS to all our friends and family who are interested in tours to Southeast Asia. Khajuraho Travel FAQs

Khajuraho temples are renowned for their intricate stone carvings that depict various aspects of medieval life, including erotic sculptures alongside religious themes. Built between 950-1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty, these sandstone temples showcase exceptional craftsmanship in their detailed architectural work. The carvings represent tantric philosophy and celebrate human emotions as part of spiritual expression. Only 25 temples remain from the original 85, divided into Western, Eastern, and Southern groups.
Most Khajuraho itineraries require 1-2 days to cover the main temple groups comfortably. A single day allows visits to the Western Group temples, which house the most famous structures including Kandariya Mahadev and Lakshmana Temple. Two days provide time for the Eastern and Southern groups plus the Light and Sound show. Khajuraho is typically combined with Orchha, Varanasi, or other Madhya Pradesh destinations in multi-city packages.

The best time to visit Khajuraho is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing. During these months, temperatures are ideal for exploring the temples and enjoying cultural experiences.

Start with the Western Group, which contains the most impressive temples including Kandariya Mahadev, the largest and most ornate structure. Lakshmana Temple and Vishvanath Temple are equally significant with detailed carvings. These three temples showcase the finest examples of Khajuraho architecture. The Western Group is also well-maintained with proper pathways and facilities. Plan 3-4 hours here before moving to other temple groups if time permits.
Khajuraho has its own airport with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Varanasi. The flight from Delhi takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. By train, Khajuraho station connects to major cities but with limited frequency. Road travel from Delhi takes 10-12 hours, while Agra is 5-6 hours away by car. Most tour packages include private transfers from nearby cities or domestic flights as part of the itinerary.
The evening Light and Sound show takes place at the Western Group temples, narrating the history of Khajuraho and the Chandela dynasty. Shows run year-round in both Hindi and English languages on alternate days. The 50-minute presentation uses temple illumination to highlight architectural details while sharing stories about their construction. Evening shows typically start around sunset time, which varies by season. Advance booking through the Archaeological Survey of India is recommended.
Khajuraho works well with several circuit combinations. Popular pairings include Orchha for its palaces and Gwalior Fort, creating a Madhya Pradesh heritage route. Many Golden Triangle extensions add Khajuraho between Agra and Varanasi. The temples also combine with wildlife experiences at Bandhavgarh or Kanha National Parks. Flight connections make it easy to include Khajuraho in broader north India itineraries covering Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh destinations.
Photography is allowed in the temple complex courtyards and exteriors without additional fees. However, photography inside the sanctum sanctorum of active temples may be restricted. The Western Group offers the best lighting conditions for temple photography, especially during golden hour times. Professional cameras and tripods are generally permitted in the Archaeological Survey areas. Check current photography rules with local guides as policies can change.
The Western Group has the most developed visitor facilities including parking, restrooms, and a small museum. Licensed guides are available at temple entrances who can explain the historical and architectural significance of the carvings. The town has accommodation ranging from budget guesthouses to heritage hotels. Restaurants serve both Indian and international cuisine. ATMs, medical facilities, and shops selling handicrafts are located in the main market area near the temples.
While active temples may request modest clothing covering shoulders and legs, the Archaeological Survey areas have no strict dress codes. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as temple complexes involve considerable walking on stone surfaces. Light, breathable clothing works best during hot months, while layers are useful in winter mornings and evenings. Since many temples involve climbing steps, avoid restrictive clothing that might limit movement during exploration.
