Where you stay in Bandhavgarh can be just as important as the safari itself. This June, as part of our Ground Truth Trip across the tiger reserves of Central India, our team at Alkof Holidays spent a full day and night at Mahua Kothi, a Taj Safari lodge located on the edge of Bandhavgarh National Park. We have been sending guests to Taj Safaris properties for years, but this visit gave us the opportunity to experience the lodge exactly as our guests would, meet the team, and discover the small details that rarely appear in hotel brochures.

This blog is our honest account of that visit, written for travelers who are trying to decide where to stay for a Bandhavgarh tiger safari and want a real picture, not a brochure.

Where Mahua Kothi Is Located And Why It Matters

Mahua Kothi sits close to the Tala gate of Bandhavgarh National Park, which is the zone with the highest tiger sighting record in the reserve. The lodge takes its name from the Mahua tree, a tree that holds deep cultural value for the tribal communities of this region. That name is not just decoration. Once you are inside the property, you understand why it was chosen.

The lodge is spread across 45 acres of land. What surprised us most is that only about 5 acres of this land is actually used for the cottages, dining areas, and guest activities. The rest has been kept exactly as it was, left wild and untouched. Walking through the property, you do not feel like you are inside a hotel compound. You feel like you've stepped into a natural woodland rather than a hotel property. For anyone searching for a genuine jungle lodge near Bandhavgarh National Park rather than a resort that only borrows the name, this is the difference that stands out immediately.

Mud Cottages Built Around The Forest, Not Instead Of It

During our walk with the Lodge Manager, Mr. Brijesh, we were shown one of the mud cottages, locally known as a kutiya. A large tree trunk passes directly through the cottage. Curious why it hadn't been removed during construction, we asked about it. Rather than cutting down a healthy living tree, the Mahua Kothi team designed the cottage around it, preserving the tree in its original location. It is a thoughtful design choice that allows guests to experience the forest as an integral part of their stay, rather than something viewed from outside the room.

A living tree trunk has been preserved inside one of the mud cottages at Mahua Kothi, reflecting the lodge's commitment to building around nature rather than replacing it.

This is a small detail, but it tells you a lot about how this luxury jungle lodge in Bandhavgarh thinks about nature. The lodge has only 12 luxury cottages in total, which keeps the property intimate and avoids the crowded feeling you sometimes get at bigger resorts. The cottages use natural material wherever possible, are spaced apart for privacy, and are designed to blend into the surrounding bamboo and sal trees rather than stand out from them. Each cottage opens into its own private courtyard, so you are never looking directly into another guest's space, which matters a great deal for travelers who are booking Mahua Kothi for a private and quiet wildlife holiday.

An Evening With Naturalist Raj Kishore

One of the best parts of our stay was sitting outside under the night sky with Mahua Kothi's in house wildlife naturalist, Mr Raj Kishore. Many of the guests who have stayed at Mahua Kothi over the years have specifically mentioned Raj Kishore Ji in their feedback, and after spending an evening with him, we completely understood why. He has spent years tracking tigers in Bandhavgarh and knows the individual tigers, their territories, and their family lines the way most people know their own neighbors.

Raj Kishore shared stories about specific tigers in Bandhavgarh, the daily patterns of the forest, and how Taj Safaris has worked closely with the Bandhavgarh forest department on wildlife conservation over the years. This is not just entertainment for guests. It gives you a real sense of what it takes to protect a tiger reserve, and it adds meaning to the safari drives that follow. If you are the kind of traveler who wants more than just a tiger photograph, and you want to actually understand the forest you are visiting, an evening with a naturalist like Raj Kishore is worth as much as the safari itself.

Experiencing the Lodge Beyond the Safari

We stayed at Mahua Kothi for a full day, which gave us time to experience more than just the rooms. Lunch and dinner were served inside the restaurant because of the summer heat. The food reflected the region, using local ingredients prepared with care. Even indoors, the dining space opens out toward the forest, so you are still surrounded by the sounds and views of the jungle rather than a closed in city style restaurant. This kind of setting is hard to recreate anywhere else, and it is a big part of why Taj Safaris lodges are recommended so often for a Bandhavgarh luxury safari stay.

Do Not Compare It To A City Taj Hotel

This is something we want to be honest about, because a lot of travelers come in with the wrong expectation. Mahua Kothi is a Taj property, so many travelers arrive expecting the experience of a city Taj hotel. That isn't what Mahua Kothi is designed to be, nor should it be. Mahua Kothi is a nature lodge first. Its luxury comes from privacy, personal service, and closeness to the wild, not from marble lobbies or city style formality. Once you accept that this is a forest lodge built for nature lovers, the experience makes complete sense and the value becomes obvious.

Why We Recommend Mahua Kothi For A Bandhavgarh Tiger Safari

Bandhavgarh has one of the highest tiger densities of any reserve in India, and staying close to the park with a team that understands the forest makes a real difference in your safari experience. Mahua Kothi combines an exceptional location near Tala Gate with thoughtfully designed cottages, experienced naturalists, and a level of privacy that is increasingly difficult to find in modern safari lodges.
