This is an intermediate-level tour, so you need a reasonable cycling base — ideally 40 to 60 km rides on hilly terrain before the trip. You do not need to be a professional cyclist, but complete beginners will find the high-altitude climbs very demanding.
Khardung La sits above 5,300 metres and is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The climb involves steep gradients and very thin air. A support vehicle accompanies the group throughout, so you can ride sections or the full climb depending on your condition on the day.
Yes. Leh is at 3,500 metres and the tour starts and ends there. At least 2 full rest days in Leh before cycling begins are strongly recommended to avoid altitude sickness. Check with Alkof Holidays whether acclimatisation days are built into the 12-day itinerary or need to be added separately.
Yes. Nubra Valley, Pangong TSO Lake, and Durbuk all fall within restricted areas requiring an Inner Line Permit. Alkof Holidays arranges these permits as part of the tour — you do not need to apply independently.
This expedition runs with a maximum of 10 cyclists per departure, which keeps the group small and ensures proper attention from the guides and support crew. We do not cancel departures due to low bookings. The tour operates from a minimum of 1 person, so your departure is confirmed regardless of how many others have booked on the same date.
June to September is the only viable window. Roads to Khardung La and Pangong TSO are closed from October through May due to snow. July and August offer the most stable conditions, though short afternoon rains are possible.
Yes. A support vehicle carrying luggage, supplies, and spare equipment travels with the group. If you are unable to complete a stretch due to fatigue or altitude effects, you can ride in the vehicle and rejoin the cycling route when ready.
Bicycles are provided. We include well-maintained mountain bikes with front suspension and gearing suited for high-altitude climbs. Each rider also has a backup cycle available in case of mechanical issues, and a professional cycle mechanic travels with the group throughout the tour. You do not need to bring your own bike.
The tour covers deluxe accommodation, daily meals, fully guided service, and private transport throughout. We also include mountain bikes, a support vehicle, oxygen cylinders for altitude emergencies, daily health check-ins, Inner Line Permits, Ladakh Environment Fee, wildlife charges, entry fees to monasteries and museums where applicable, and all applicable taxes. Flights and travel insurance are not included. For the complete inclusions checklist, please refer to the inclusions section on the tour page.
The guide and support team are trained to recognise altitude sickness symptoms. If a participant is seriously affected, the standard protocol is immediate descent to a lower altitude. Travel insurance covering high-altitude cycling and medical evacuation is strongly advised before joining this tour.
Yes. Solo travellers join a group departure. The age range of 18 to 65 years means groups tend to be mixed. Alkof Holidays operates the tour in English plus 8 other languages, so international participants are common.
